I just got a note from Mr Dr office saying my Vitamin d levels are low, along with a coupe of scripts for different types of Vitamin D, d2 and d3. Anyone else have this?

I have an appointment tomorrow, but thought someone on here mightknow something about it... cause...symptoms...etc

Thanks

I've also struggled with low Vit D and needed prescription strength supplements to help out. It's not uncommon in people who don't get a lot of sun exposure (can also happen more in vegetarians, non-milk drinkers, and obese people). Since I'm currently obese, live in the Pacific NW AND have very sun sensitive skin (I can burn in 5 minutes, sunblock or not!) I have trouble with keeping my levels up. The supplements are easy to take and very effective.

Symptoms can vary, but can include fatigue or muscle fatigue and bone pain. Extreme cases of Vit D deficiency are called rickets and can lead to softened bones and skeletal problems and is especially dangerous in kids (it's why Vit D is added to milk). Realistically, though, many people never exhibit symptoms and are only diagnosed after blood testing. I was one of those. Never knew I had it and never felt different after taking the supplements.

Hope that help! :)

That is correct, it is from avoiding the sun. Because of the concerns about skin cancer there has been a huge increase in vit D deficiency. The best way to get it is through exposure to the sun. So if you can get out when the sun is weak (early morning etc) without sun screen on for about 10 minutes it really is beneficial.

In the meantime take your supplements.

Just about everyone that is over weight has a low Vitamin D level so don't freak out. My doctor put me on over the counter Vitamin D first.....when that didn't work he prescibed it. I took 1 pill a week for a month. My level was 9.....and this was during the end of summer last year and I lived at the lake!!....so any way, now I still take Calcium with Vitamin D and then 2000 additional units. I should be getting a blood draw soon.

I do feel a lot better now that I had the prescription.

I went to the doctor with irritability, fatigue, short-term memory loss, and slight confusion that had been going on for months. Plus major joint pain, but I have psoriatic arthritis so that's not unusual. My endocrinologist(sp?) tested my Vitamin D and it was really low, and had been for quite some time. He put me on 50,000 IU once a week and it didn't improve so he upped it to 3X a week and I'm much better now. I'm back to my usual self and have more energy and the joint pain has lessened to the normal arthritis pain. I couldn't believe how much the vitamin D affected. I'm a totally changed person since my levels are back to normal. In fact I credit the increase with my decision to finally do something about this extra weight and get healthy again. Everything that's wrong with me is because of the extra weight I carry. Well except for the arthritis, but it's definitely not helped by it....

You're not alone. Mines were low as well. I have to take mines once a week. You have been given all the great advice above. Good luck with everything :)

I was told the same thing and when I told the Dr. That I'm having the surgery with he says most of his patients have low Vitamin d. Some causes are low exposure to sun and if you are a vegetarian. Symptoms / tired and low energy and appears it hinders weight loss. Funny thing is I live in Florida ! Hope this helps....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
