Thanks To The Veteran Banders

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to take a moment to thank all of u banders that have been around the block but still come here and advise and encourage us that haven't been around long. It is so encouraging to know there is somewhere I can go and get answers from someone who has been there before. So please keep coming back and know how appreciated u are!

Thanks, Manda, but some of us - me, anyway - should thank you. LBT participation is one of the things that keeps me on track!

Jean,

You've been quite encouraging, and I appreciate it.

Jean, was sorry to hear that you are having your band removed, but am glad to hear that you will be getting a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy next month. Hope you are successful with that.

What happened to your band Jean?

Unbeknownst to me (since I hadn't had a fill or any eating or other band problems for over a year), my old 4cc band was too tight. That put so much pressure on my esophagus that it dilated and lost its ability to transport food into my stomach. Now I'm afraid that even a bigger, newer band could create the same problem, so I'm revising to the sleeve. Not thrilled about it, but making the best of the circumstances. I'm extremely lucky that I have another surgical option for weight management and even more that my insurance is willing to pay for it.

I'll always be a bandster at heart, though!

Best of luck with that. I see that you are having that done Friday; I hope you make a speedy recovery.

On the contrary, like Jean says, coming here is beneficial to me. Its certainly a good reminder not to ignore symptoms like heartburn and the enthusiasm and optimism of people just starting out is contageous.

ok, question!! What is considered a veteran? I just passed my year mark and I consider myself a veteren in some cases but I would think I would need to maintain for awhile before I would consider myself a true veteren :)

Maybe next year after my weigh in I will be a true veteren.. lol

There's a band vets forum at another support site, and to join that group you need to be at least one year post-op. So based on that...Welcome to the world of band veterans!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
