Post Op Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on Thursday and since my husband has to go to work on Friday I will need to make my own "drinks". I have read many posts about post-op Protein shakes...I've got a question. I mix my shakes myself and have been using 2 scoops in 1c Water. I know that that will be too thick and and am wondering if 1 scoop in 1c water is thin enough or if I should start with maybe 1/2 scoop in a cup of water? or maybe 1/4 scoop in 1/2 cup of water since it seems like after a couple sips I will be full (which I am really looking forward to) and heaven forbid I waste a cup of the " most awesome drink ever invented." :P

The first few days, you probably won't be able to get a Protein shake down. I bought a product called New whey...you can get it at Walmart. It has 42 grams of Protein in just 4oz and it is like kool-aid....I would mix it with 32 oz of crystal light and sip on it all day. I also bought the unjury chicken broth..it has 20grams protein per cup. Most doctors have you on thin/clear liquids for atleast a week before moving you up to full liquids where you would be drinking the traditional thick Protein drinks....but every doctor is different

Oh by the way the New Whey comes in grape, acai berry and watermellon I mix grape with the grape kool-aid purple smash, the acai berry with the walmart great value grape blackberry, and the watermellon with crystal lights cherry lime-aid.-----I will also throw some ice in the blender and pulverize it to be a snow cone consistence and then pour the drink over it. I would drink it with a spoon and it helped me control how much I was drinking (no large gulps) the first few days.

I highly recommend the premixed shakes called ' 'lean shake' from GNC... Much thinner than most of the others, and I really liked what it tastes like. I'm five days postop and can drink 2, almost 3, of these without a problem.

I actually still have problems drinking Protein Shakes if they are too thick and I was banded in January. So I have found that if I mix 1 scoop(Unjury chocolate Splendor) in my large Decaf coffee in the morning I have no problem drinking it, but right after surgery you will probably have trouble getting much down at first of anything, because of swelling and if they put a fill in at that time. Just make sure you get enough Water to stay hydrated. Good luck.

i had no problem with thicker [protein shakes. i would mix with plenty of greek yoghurt and i loved them. i still do. mind you i didnt drink gallons of it either... they were very filling. the creamy taste from the yoghurt was important for me then. i had such a horrible breath and taste in my mouth. It was a pleasure to drink. i think just fiddle with your consistancy. Everyone is different.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
