Hi, I'm Ready To Get Started Saving My Life.

Recommended Posts

Hi group, I am just starting out on this journey! I have only had my first appointment with the surgeon. I go to the first support meeting tomorrow night and the psych is set for the end of May but no word on the Nutritionist date yet. Hoping that is soon.

I have battled weight all my life so I'm really really excited to think perhaps this will all work out for me as I've seen that's worked for others on this forum.

When I went to the surgeon the other day they asked if I knew anyone who had had LapBand and I said no.So this is a good way for me to get some much needed info, and possible encouragement when it comes to the time I am sure I will be in need.

Welcome! I've found so much great information on this site. Hopefully your support group will be helpful as well. I went to my first one earlier this month and it was great. I can't wait to go back in May. (and I really can't wait to be banded!)

Wow just got kind of upsetting news. When I left the Dr office on Tuesday I'd gotten it into my head that it would only be 2-3 months before the surgery. I know that's what the nurse said but now I'm thinking she meant that's how long it takes to find out if the insurance will cover it. I called today and she said 4-6 visits with the Nutritionist BEFORE the surgery. I knew everyone had said it took a long time but thought maybe it had changed. I was all happy thinking I'd have it done over the summer (since I don't work in the summer) but now it looks like Oct. I'm a bit deflated but not much I can do.

No worries it will go by before you know it. I had my last appt on April 20th, now just waiting on my approval!

Congrats on deciding to take this step! I know it's disappointing to have to wait. I finished my 6 month wait at the end of March and am getting banded in a couple of weeks. So like she said, it does fly by. Take this time to care for yourself emotionally, try some Protein Drinks, add in some physical activity, start telling trusted friends, etc. And if you get frustrated come here and vent. :-P

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
