Back To Work

Recommended Posts

i have finally decided to do it. my question is this: i sit at my desk all day, nothing strenuous... i want to be able to go back to work within three days. is this possible? i just dont want to tell my co-workers. we are a small office and my boss is a nay-sayer. i want to do this with the minimal time off from work. -r

You should have no problems, I went back two days after. I was exhausted, when I got home, I only worked a 1/2 day, but on the 3 day I was ok and back full time. Good luck

Unfortunately, it really is an individual thing. My surgery should have been difficult: I was around 500 pounds at the time of surgery, and I'm male - with all of the notorious 'horrible patient' stereotypes truthfully applying to me. My wife's should have been a breeze: she's much smaller, and has had significant surgery before, and she's female - with all of the notorious 'high pain threshold' stereotypes applying to her.

I could have driven myself home from the surgery if they'd allowed me too - and I was back at my studio working within a couple of days. Within a week, you'd never guess that I'd had surgery at all, unless you looked under my shirt

My wife, on the other hand, has had some trouble with the gas referral pain. The process didn't go as smoothly for her at all - and yet, she was able to work within 3 days...

All things being equal, you should be fine - particularly if you have the type of desk job that will allow you to get up frequently and walk around a little.

Of course, I'm assuming that you are relatively healthy to start with... this is rightfully considered 'major' surgery, so I'd double-check anything you read here with your surgeon :P

I took off the Friday of my surgery and was back in my office on Monday. I didn't have any problems. I was a little bit tired on Monday, but I managed to work the full day (and I work long days!). By Tuesday, I was pretty much back at my old pace. One thing to remember is to get up and walk around a bit during the day. That will help with the gas pains and the recovery in general.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
