June Surgery - Anyone Not Lose Their Hair?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for June 13th. i would of liked it sooner but I changed jobs and this will be the first chance I can get a week and half off. However, I am just glad I get to have the surgery. After two denials, I called and made my own appeal and I was shocked to receive a call saying they had approved it. So, remember, never give up. I talked to my doctor's office before I made the call and they said "they probably need to hear it from you, the patient". Not sure what I said that changed their minds but I'm glad I kept trying.

Now on to the hair topic. I have thick shoulder length hair and I hate to think about losing it. Is there anyone that has NOT lost their hair? My doctor did say that thinning could happen but some of the stories here sound really bad.

Some older members say to make sure you get enough Protein and take Biotin. I started taking biotin 5000 prior to surgery as a precaution and am one month post-op. I have not noticed any hair issues.

Thanks! I have seen Biotin mentioned in a lot of posts. Where do I find it? Do I have to go to GNC or can I find it with the Vitamins at the grocery store?

Any store should carry it. I found the 5000 at Walmart. I had gone to a Fred Meyer (Kroger) before, but only found it in the 1000 or 2000 dose.

Im 2 1/2 yrs out and my hair never changed. My dcos office recommended Nizoral Shampoo (u get it at the hair salon) to use after the surgery. I never used it and never had any problems. About 4the yrs ago, I lost 30 lbs after my husband died and my hair came out in clumps. Its definatelt true that u need to watch ur Protein intake.

Just wanted u to know that hair thinning doesn't happen to everyone. Good luck with ur surgery

Thank you! I really appreciate the replys. I agree anethesia can be hard on your hair. I have had several major surgeries over the years and I think my hair got whiter every time...lol On the upside, I went from a brunette to a blonde! I will also keep an eye on my proten, I think that will be important to keep up my stamina.

I am on Biotin as well. 1,000 mg. I have noticed a change in my hair for the better since adding it. I now have curls. Weird. Not Elaine on Seinfeld curls but the curls I had when I was a child. Plus the hair on my legs has reappeared. (TMI?) I am not a hairy person by nature and so blond that the hair on my legs has not been there in years.

My MD told me that your body only uses as much Biotin as it wants so if you take 1,000 or 5,000 mg it doesn't matter. So I do 1,000.

Protein is key and every time you have an appointment with the docs they should be asking you if you have having issues with hair, skin, nails.

I had Hair loss at about months 2-4. I started taking Biotin (get 5,000 mg tick tac size) and the loss stopped. It was not super bad but I noticed it while washing my hair. I was taking other medications post op and did not want to take Biotin until I spoke with my hematologist. I buy it at drug stores but look for buy one get one free sales.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
