Not Getting The First Fill,anyone?

Recommended Posts

Getting stuck basically is what it sounds like. If I eat too fast and don't chew well enough' date=' sometimes the food doesn't want to go down. It sits there and you can feel it. Causes some chest pain and then your mouth starts creating saliva to try and move the food through. People call it sliming.[/quote']

I'm post op one week but I've had no issues, nausea, nothin. I'm happy!

So, your food is stuck, youre "sliming". Then what? Do you vomit? I don't wanna vomit! Does drinking Water help?

I did not get a fill at my first fill appointment. The NP and I discussed and we both decided I didn't need one. I did make an appt for 3 weeks later and I did get my first fill then. Talk to your medical adviser and you will make the decision together.

I would NOT suggest drinking water if you're stuck (imagine pouring more water in a clogged sink; eventually it will overflow)! Sometimes it will pass, but other times you will feel 100 times better if you get it back up. It's not like vomiting as when you're sick. You're just getting the stuck food (no stomach acid, etc.) up out of your pouch. I have PB'd (many call it "productive burping") many times....now I just bend over the sink at the waist and cough...up it comes.

Thank you Shauna. I didn't realize PBing was a voluntary thing! And you eased my mind. Getting food unstuck doesn't so scary to me now. I'm eating soft mushies but haven't been in to see doc and dietician about what to expect after post op week one.

So...if you don't get a fill, can you not worry (as much) about tiny bites and chewing to mush?

And about the getting stuck thing as well?

Can you ever eat "normal" again after WLS??? I'm not talking about junk food @ every meal, I'm talking about good choices, but geez, can you not worry every minute about not eating and drinking @ the same time, tiny bites, chewing to mush, and getting stuck episodes??

Sounds like trading one obsessions for another, in a way.

I have barely any fill. and I don't worry about chewing or anything. I've never gotten truly stuck. I've had a couple times that I've felt food going down for a few minutes (painfully), stood up and sipped some Water and after a minute or two it went away (I don't think that constitutes being stuck, since from my understanding that lasts for hours). Weirdly it only has happened when I was at work when I was having dinner. I guess maybe stress tightens it a little.

Oh and I didn't get my one and only tiny fill til 5 months post op.

Don't get me wrong, PBing is not always voluntary. I've just learned after all this time when I need to get it up and when it's going to pass. The first time I was really stuck I really thought I was going to die. It wasn't fun. But I've learned since then, and you will too. Obviously, we want to avoid doing that but sometimes it happens. You will get through it.

I agree w many of you guys who said,, if u NEED a fill and are obsessed w not getting it, WHY did u get the lapband in the first place. Just go on another diet, sure is cheaper. On the other hand, IF u are losing appropriately, u just don't need a fill, so don't ! There is one woman somewhere on here who is positively obsessed w getting no fills regardless, what a waste of money!!!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
