MendyB 8 Posted April 18, 2012 I was approved yesterday and today I have a thousand questions.... The one big question for everyone is how long did most of you take off work? I'm a part time teacher at a local college and really unsure what to tell them. Im not really broadcasting this surgery so Im really unsure what I should say or shouldn't say... I also have a 18 month old child who likes to play! My mother is flying into town and I'm unsure how long I will need help. I've read that most people are up and moving the day of or day after the procedure. I already know my insurance and surgeon requires a 23 hour stay in the hospital but as for going home what is your opinion on assistance?
yellowrose88 43 Posted April 18, 2012 Everyone is different first of all. I had surgery on Friday and was back to work on Tuesday. I sit at a computer all day but looking back I wish I would have taken at least a week off. My surgery was out patient so I had to have someone with me for the first 24 hours. Also you will not be able to pick anything up weighing more than 10 lbs for two weeks I believe. I hope this helps and good luck!
kmt1973 92 Posted April 18, 2012 I would take at least a week, if you stay at your desk. Sitting was very uncomfortable, not painful though. Also, I picked up my grandson(20lbs) 3 days later and my port area really pulled, so I would watch that. I was up and walking right away after surgery and it felt good to. These are just my experiences.
deanne21 4 Posted April 18, 2012 I had my surgery on a saturday im a beauty therapist and didn't return to work for 11 days . I could of gone back after about 7 to be honest and would of been quite comfortable. I was quite tired at the end of the day but now almost 3 weeks post op I'm finding it easier! Good luck it's worth it.
MendyB 8 Posted April 18, 2012 Thank you everyone! I know everyone is different but there has been so many conflicting postop stories I was confused. Maybe I need to stop reading so much and just sit back and enjoy;)
JennyBee 340 Posted April 18, 2012 I took off 1 week... It was perfect . I was running after my 2 and 6 year old in no time:) Good luck on your journey!
ready4changein2011 70 Posted April 18, 2012 Everyone s different I was off 6 weeks but have a demanding job. I would at least take a week or 2 that was my original plan. As for the hospital stay I was outpatient and stayed 3 days d/t nausea and vomiting (dry heaving). So allow more than a few days in case something happens. I had assistance for around a week. If you dont want your job to know say you had a hernia repair. People at my job asked and I said I needed to take a leave of absence for 6 wks, personal reasons. Goodluck. 2muchfun 8,927 Posted April 18, 2012 I really had no pain and went to work the next day but looking back, I was still in shock for a week from the medications, antibiotics, anesthesia. If you can, take a week, you won't regret it. BTW-I work from home so it was easier to take breaks.
Shannon28 26 Posted April 18, 2012 I'm a stay at home mom so I can't help you with the job thing but I do have a 1 year old and 3 year old BOYS that are extremely rough. I'm not allowed to pick them (or anything over 10 pounds) up for a month. I'm only 3 days post op and I can tell you it is rough... at least for me. My 1 year old doesn't understand that I can't hold him and it's emotionally tearing me up. My mom is helping but there are times she doesn't catch him in time and he's trying to climb up on me. I'm not able to bend over to give them a bath or even change my 1 yr olds diaper so my mom has been doing all of that. The pain isn't terrible or anything but the port site is sore and feels really tight if I bend or twist. It has gotten a lot better since yesterday and hoping for even better tomorrow! I would take a week off and even more depending on how your pain is.
hopefully soon 13 Posted April 18, 2012 I was back to work in 8 days....a moderately active job with minimal lifting.....like the others I recommend u take a week off and have help for a week. The port site will be the sorest area. Best of luck!

MendyB 8 Posted April 19, 2012 Thank you everyone! I'm taking your advice and taking a full week. Even though I do not have a demanding job it will atleast give me time to adjust to my new lifestyle.
gottobeme 81 Posted April 20, 2012 My surgery was last Friday and I took this whole week off. Although I have been feeling good I think having the time to learn how to eat without having to worry about work and working my "eating" breaks around my schedule has been a great gift to myself.
