Please Help, Very Scared!

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been banded for 3 years and just this past weekend I have been having a very difficult time keeping things down. Friday I couldn't keep much down, Saturday things were fine and then yesterday and today, I can't even keep Protein Shakes down. I moved to a new state and don't have a lap band doctor here. I am waiting on a call back from one office, but am very concerned. This has never happened in all 3 years. Should I go to the hospital?

You did the right thing calling an office. Hopefully you will here from them very soon. Sounds like you need a bit of an unfill. The band can tighten suddenly for no particular reason, it's happened to me. All the ER would probably do is give you an IV so you don't get dehydrated. If Water is staying down, be sure to drink as much as you can. That's too bad you don't have a dr. your seeing, I hope you find one today!

I'm sorry to hear that this is happening to you. Its sounds frightening but its good that you were able to get in touch with a local doctor. Something is definitely happening with your throat, band and stomach. While waiting for the Dr. to get back to you, don't push it with the Protein Shakes because they may be too thick for you at this point. Try drinking tiny sips of hot, clear, thin liquids through out the day (broth, tea, hot Water, etc.) so that you can keep hydrated. The warmth from the hot beverage will help to relax the muscles. I hope you start to feel better soon.

when you moved to the new state did you fly there? i heard that flying (change in altitude) can distort the band tightness.

A lot of things can cause what you're describing, from stress to a band slip.

A band slip isn't usually an emergency unless you're unable to drink even Clear Liquids. Most ER's won't do anything but palliative care for band patients, but if you're not even able to drink Water, go to the ER anyway. They'll give you IV fluids and may be able to help find a bariatric surgeon to take you on.

Good luck!

Thanks so much. Water seems to go down fine, no problems there. I am going to try some broth now, and see if that helps! Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
