Free Lap Band On April 30, And I Am Saying No.

Recommended Posts

I've been schedule for my lap band on the 30th. I have a large abdominal hernia on my left side, the doctor I seen referred me for a lap band before my hernia could be repaired. As a member of a northwestern indian tribe, I qualified for the lap band at the cost of the Indian Health Services. I did all my pre lap band test last week, and after speaking with the dietitian, I've decided against the surgery. I am not emotionally or mentally prepared for this. I never wanted the lap band. It was just a nesscessary step to getting my hernia repaired. People call me crazy for not wanting this. They compare it to winning the lottery for your health. However I'm not willing to make a life long life style commitment for something I don't want. I've decided to lose the weight on my own. I used to be a former amateur power lifter, and I think I have it in me to take this on my own to save myself. I'm only 27 and don't feel it's too late. I just returned from my local gym after the first time in three years. I feel great! Sure don't lift what I used to, but its a start. Good luck and one love to those of you that choose the band. I wish you all happiness and many successes on your new paths.

If you aren't ready for a band and aren't willing to make a lifetime lifestyle change, the band is not for you. Any WLS should be a choice of last resort. It's not an easy way out or a shortcut to lose weight. If you aren't that point, you are making the correct choice.

If you are not committed to the lifestyle change, then the band is not for you. Good luck with your exercise!

I commend you for recognizing that you don't want the lapband, and that you arent ready commit to a new ilfestyle and way of eating and living. A lot of people get the band and are very disappointed when things don't go their way. You are saving yourself some heartache in the longrun.

At only 27 and being a former power lifter, Im sure you can get back on track. Good luck with your operation and weightloss. :) Share some exercise tips on your journey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
