Hiatal Hernia... Anyone Have Theirs Surgically Repaired?

Recommended Posts

My hiatal hernia was found before surgery and was repaired when my band was put in. My acid reflux was to the point that it would come up during the night while I slept and cut off my air way' date=' so I would wake up gasping for breath. I'm thrilled to say that I haven't had any reflux since it was repaired :)

My suggestion would be to keep your band and just repair the hernia.[/quote']

The EXACT same thing happens to me, I get so scared like I'll never catch my breath and die! Very scary

I had suffered for heartburn for the past couple years. My surgeon told me that, during surgery, she would look for a hiatel hernia and repair it. Well, low and behold I had quite a large one. It's repaired and no more heartburn!

Excellent. I am scheduled for surgery in a few weeks. I am crossing my fingers this will be my final fix. Never had surgery before getting banded. This will be #4 in as many years.

I have a question about reflux with hernia. The reflux i get is as follows: chest pain in the center of my chest then i will burp up acid within 10mins. Never fails. I have lost about 25 on my own and thought with that and diet change my symptoms would ease. Nope. My heart is fine, it's reflux. I've never heard anyone else with the chest pain followed up in 10mins with acid burp and my pcp commented they may find a hernia on me. Just curious!

I had one repaired during lapband placement too but I had no symptoms. I noticed no difference after surgery. It's funny how some of us had one but never knew.

I have chest pain from the reflux, but I don't burp acid. So my symptoms are not quite the same. If your PCP thinks it may be a hernia... that is a possibility. You would need an EGD to diagnose.

Hello, I did have mine surgiacally repaired along with a revision of my band. The reason my surgeon found it was because I was bringing up almost everything I ate. He wanted to make sure my band did not slip. I had an upper GI done and that is what the problem was. I didn't have heart burn or anything like that just the throwing up.

Has anyone been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia after banding. Did you have it surgically repaired? Did that help with restriction and reflux? Did you opt for a different treatment?

I was recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and severe esophagitis. My surgeon's options were unfilling my band completely, surgically fixing the hernia, or removing my band completely and surgically fixing the hernia.

At first I was going to remove my band... but after some soul searching I decided to give it another shot. I made some changes to my diet and have had some relief from the reflux... and have had success with losing weight again.

I have an appointment with my surgeon in a few weeks to discuss hernia repair surgery. I am not sure what to do. Right now I feel ok... but I wonder if repairing it will give me complete relief of my symptoms and help with more consistent restriction.

Mine was repaired when my band was put on and it changed my life. I literally never have heartburn anymore, ever.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
