twins4me2 15 Posted April 22, 2012 I haven't been so bad today. I've had 3 Protein Shakes several bottles of Water and 2 glasses of unsweet tea. I ate about 5 bits of baked chicken. I am still having a hard time with my blood sugar, still over 220. The Protein shakes have 68gms. of protein, so I know I am getting enough protein. I think I am just feeling bad because of my blood sugar being high. I have been on insulin for over a year and have gotten used to my fasting blood sugars to be around 120, so when they got back in the upper 200's I just couldn't seem to wake up good. superluli 17 Posted April 22, 2012 Why is there a pre-op diet? What's the rationale behind it? I didn't have to do it, only heard about it on this site.
bigenuff 302 Posted April 22, 2012 I was told that the preop diet was to shrink the liver and make it easier tolerate since the liver sits in front of stomach.also the liver bleeds easily so if they nick it it can cause bleeding .
Jim1967 3,569 Posted April 22, 2012 Can they start surgery and stop if your liver is not shrunken No...I think that would be crazy. What they could do is ask you to weigh in prior to starting and if you've gained weight they may postpone but I doubt it. My Doc didn't force me into a all liquid diet. Week before surgery he had me on 2 Protein shakes a day plus one small meal. I am now day 6 post op and my doc couldn't have been more pleased with how it all went. He said he had a pretty easy go with it. I think the key is to just do the very best you can with the guidelines they provide and you'll do fine. Remember they are not asking you to do this as a test or even torture. They want to ensure to have the best possible conditions to ensure success without complications... NWgirl 574 Posted April 22, 2012 Can they start surgery and stop if your liver is not shrunken I know some Dr's will... Specifically, B52's Dr told him he would do just that if the liver was not right. I have also heard they may open you open like in traditional surgery with some large single incision vs laproscopically if they feel they cannot operate safely. if you are cheating now, ask yourself why and start working on the emotional side of it. You will be doing full liquids after surgery for a week or two, and it is imperative that you not cheat then because of the stomach healing.
Passionatehrt 15 Posted April 22, 2012 A lapband Dr I didnt go with (Dr. Terry Simpson) told stories of how he will open someone open and close them right back up because their liver was too fatty. So absolutely it can happen.
latisanava 12 Posted April 22, 2012 i have no idea but i hope they will do it, even if it means exta pain for me as long as they do it. im traveling 3 hrs and 180 miles for this surgery
Bel12 13 Posted April 23, 2012 I FEEL YOUR PAIN I started my pre-op liquid diet yesterday' date=' getting banded the 25th. I am furiously starving. It's not head hunger, my body is physiologically in starvation mode and the hunger pains/ lightheadedness are pretty uncomfortable bc there's no restriction yet. Having total of 770 cal a day- four ultra met light shakes (190 cal each) plus one sugar free Popsicles and h2o. My doc told me I should be exercising vigorously- maybe tomorrow or the next day after I get adjusted. I just ate a pickle and 1/8 cup pumpkin seeds because It's too early for my second shake and i felt really shakey. Surely a pickle has less calories than a SF popsicle and pickles are just Fiber, Water, vinager, and salt 0 cal, 0 carb. Is this what it feels like to come off a drug addiction??? I hope yesterday and today are the hardest.[/quote'] Have you ever checked your blood sugar . You shouldnt be feeling lightheaded. Maybe your sugar is low
Bel12 13 Posted April 23, 2012 I would stay away from pickles becuase the high amount of sodium can cause Water retention. If you must eat' date=' which I don't say you should if it's not part of your pre-op, find a Protein bar low in fat and high in protein.[/quote'] Omg I don't know if I can live without pickles
mandagay 93 Posted April 23, 2012 Can they start surgery and stop if your liver is not shrunken My dr said that If they get in and your liver isn't shrunken then they have to change from larascopic to an open surgery.
