Introduction - a Whole New World

Recommended Posts

I haven't been banded yet but am starting the process. I attended the seminar on March 8th and sent in all my paperwork, but on March 19th I received a call from the admin stating that my insurance company (BCBS of Arkansas- with my husband's work) would only cover $4,000 and the total amount they submit to insurance is about $35,000!!!

I'm not sure why the cost is so high! I've heard several people mention prices around $10,000 - $18,000.

So now I'm battling with the insurance company, trying to get dropped from that plan so I can enroll in Aetna through my work. All of this information came to light right after the close of benefits enrollment for both of us, so it looks like I might be waiting until next year to start my journey. It might be for the best as I want to make darn sure that this is the right decision for me.

I've been overweight since childhood and have tried every fad diet, exercise program, gym membership, etc... that's out there. I'm tired all the time and have terrible problems with both of my feet that make most exercise an absolute nightmare. It also seems like I'm spending more and more money- year after year- to lose weight and end up heavier every time!

I'm definitely looking forward to advise, tips and testimonials from those who have already been banded and those of you who might be in the same tight spot as I am.

I would ask the office you are trying to go through what their self pay cost is- this is usually about half the cost of what is billed to insurance. If they say the same price, consider finding a new surgeon.

I was in the same boat as you (granted I have insurance that would have covered it but I didn't want to spend a year preop). I am rather healthy, no issues from the weight yet but I knew it was a mater of time. You can't haul around an extra 100+ pounds for most of your life and not expect health issues. I hit the "enough is enough" stage about a month ago and decided to self pay. I was banded on the 3rd and so far so good, 30 pounds down from the Preop diet start 3 weeks ago. FYI In the Southern California area well recommended Dr's with 12 months of fills / checkups post op are running 12-15k and from what I have read its a good bit cheaper in other parts of the country and ALOT cheaper if you are up for going down to Mexico.

Good luck on your Quest

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
