Got My Surgery Date!

I got my surgery date of April 19th! Being both scared and excited is really doing a number on me. I had to break down and cry. I didn't know you could have tears of happiness and fear at the same time! I start my pre-op liquid diet on April 10th. It's going to be interesting to see how I handle having to cook meals for my family without being able to eat them. I'm sure at some point I'm going to get crabby about it. It feels like I'm experiencing the death of food in some way. Especially because I have always used food for comfort. I suppose that sounds completely crazy to some people. It took a long time for me to be able to accept the lifestyle changes I am making. I really hope that next year at this time I can look back and smile remembering how scared I was and be thankful I made this decision to finally be healthy and free :)

Congrats on your date Pretty. You'll do great but it is an emotional roller coaster and I'm just letting the emotions come as they will. I was banded last Monday and had one day where I found myself depressed with no outlet. I had no food to turn to. I just went for a drive and thought about how I was feeling and how before surgery I would have gone to the first fast food place and eaten my emotions away. This time I had to have a little "come to Jesus" talk with myself. "come to Jesus" talks are what I refer to getting real with myself or whoever I need to deal with. Anyway, for me, it helps looking at my emotions and feeling them, not suppressing them. Sorry I'm rambling again.

Congrats on your date! It's going to be a great year for many of us and I'm gong to enjoy the ride.

Glad your here :)

I agree with you on making meals for the family....I have 3 kids and my husband and am on the pre-op diet already (banding date is the 23rd). I told my husband that there might just be nights that he has to cook or fend for himself...we usually feed the kids (5,4,2) first anyway so that won't be hard. What I am most nervous about is late night when I am used to have "just one more treat" before bed.....

Trust me, I know how you feel about having to cook for your family. When I started my PreOp Diet, I continued to cook for my family like I would, prepared their food and just ate my diet with them. They were very supportive and even ate one meal with me. This is a hard transition and I cried several days but thought about my bad eating habits was the main reason why I was there. Just think of the positive outcome that will come once you are banded on the 19th. I am 7 days post op and wouldnt change a thing. We are here to support you as much as possible.

You guys are champs for cooking for your family. In the past three weeks I've maybe cooked five times. I flat out told my husband I couldn't do it a d bought husband friendly meals to make. For the mist part I even left the room. I'd workout while they ate. It worked out nicely.

It doesn't sound crazy to me. In my family and among my friends, food is almost always used for celebrations, for mourning, for comfort, for get-togethers, etc., so I completely understand why you feel like you do. Cooking and baking are two of my favorite activities, and I feel like I need to replace them after surgery with something that's not food-related. I want a fresh start, yet I'm reluctant to give up the activities I enjoy the most. I've decided I am going to wait until after surgery to see how it goes. Right now, I am always hungry and consequently have little-to-no willpower around food; I am hoping that will change after surgery. Others have mentioned that they no longer desire the foods they used to or only want a few bites; hopefully, we will have the similar experiences.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
