Low Carb Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I met with the nutritionist yesterday. I have lost 6.5 lbs (9 on my scale in underwear) and BMI dropped from 70.3 to 68.0. When I met with the surgeon in March, he told me he does not require weight loss, but it would help my lungs during surgery. Well, of course I want to help with that!!LOL.

I went back to my carb addict's diet. I like it because I can have any carbs I like once each day during my reward meal. I have lost many times with this, but usually stop when I get busy. There is a lot of planning. You have to keep lots of Protein and veges on hand.

The first 4 days are heck, headaches, weakness etc., but the more Water you drink the better you feel. By day 5-7 your carb cravings are so low. I didn't even want dessert by day 5 even though I could have it. I had a glass of wine instead.

Even when the scale does not move, the inches are falling off. My skirt fit much better this week.

Anyway, the nutritionist told me it was good I was already doing low carb, because it will keep me from having the cravings as many do since I have gone through the withdrawls already.

I really hope this helps. I was eating lots of Protein in the first 4 days( 2 cans of tuna at lunch with 3 cups spinach, cheese, and dressing. Instead of 2 Snacks I had 6 in the early days, but that was ok as long as it was not carbs. I usually had turkey and cheese roll ups with lettuce or spinach.)

By the 4th day I was down to 3 meals, and one snack. My late night Lays chips cravings are gone.

There are many low carb eating plans out there. Choose best one for you. If you want to get a jump on it before you are banded, it may save you a lot of heartache after banding. I hope it helps me too. I am waiting for approval. I could be banded within the next 6 weeks.

The very best to everyone. I am excited for all of us.

The low carb way of eating works best for me, too. I eat protien and veggies. I also eat almonds as a snack. I have an egg and a couple of pieces of bacon for Breakfast, lunch meat and cheese for lunch, and then chicken or fish and veggies for dinner. No bread, potatoes, rice, no fast food, no sweet drinks, no Desserts. I am feeling great! And I can't forget the low carb margarita mix...1 carb!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
