Oh C@@p - It Seems I May Still Be Obese

Recommended Posts

Reading the recent articles about The "Baloney Mass Index" it seems I may still be obese.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-04-04/baloney-mass-index-putting-lives-at-risk/3932090

I am 5' and 51kg. My BMI is well within the healthy range but I am still an apple shape not a pear shape. I still and always will carry my excess weight around my middle.

"You could be 5'5", 125 pounds [57 kilograms] and look thin and fit in a dress, but you have so much fat.

For someone like me who is obsessed about my weight as it is that was the last thing I needed to hear. My stomach has always concerned me and now it seems rightly so. Although on the other side I have been told by my Dr that it is normal to have some weight around the middle, that it is healthy and that my weight is fine.

So what is a girl to do?

Ignore the media?

Keep stressing?

Go on a starvation diet?

Have Lipo to have it sucked out as that is the only way it will be lost from the correct place?

Have a Tummy Tuck "

Maybe the answer is to switch off the TV/Radio/Internet and just become a media recluse.

How does this news make the rest of you feel?

Hmm, there is probably something to it. I also carry my weight around the middle, and I have heard that it is more unhealthy for the internal organs to be packaged in so much fat. BUT, I would also say there is only so much to do and that the way you are now is much better for your health than before.

I saw this as well. I'll be honest, I think it's all a bunch of crap.

My fear is that this is only going to further the epidemic of eating disorders in our society because people ARE obsessed with the numbers. I say if you're a healthy weight for your height, then forget the revised BMI.

Take it with a grain of salt. Its not news that belly fat is *statistically* linked with higher risk of certain diseases, but you have so many other factors involved. You may have more belly fat than the next person but if you eat better, drink kess, exercise more, have a happier relationship and less stress you may well be FAR less likely to succumb to diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Its like anything, you can do everything perfectly too and still get dealt a bum hand. All my doctors were astounded that I got bowell cancer, Im low risk every way you look at it- except for my gene pool!

And at the end of the day, what more can you do than what youve already done? You cant influence wher your body likes to store fat.

Elcee, in the end, there is only so much we can do to help extend our lifespan... My aunt was in her 50s and in excellent health, petite and fit and she had a major heart attach and lived the next 10 years with a difibulator and was pretty miserable the last 5.

You have lost the excess weight that im sure your doctor was pleased with and stress will definately not help. So I would keep up with great work you have done and live life to the fullest.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
