I had always considered WLS and dreamed that if I could afford it, I would have the surgery with out any reservations. I already knew my insurance company would not cover the expense, so I would need to a self pay patient. Things started coming togethere in January and I started checking out different doctors in my area. I ended up going with Dr. Cohen, friendly staff, and the female I worked with the most had the surgery and was very informative. I scheduled the surgery, pre-op was horrible beacuse I was on vacation with my kids and watching them eat while I drank my shakes was no fun, but I knew the end result was worth it. I was scheduled for surgery at 645 am and I was home by 1030. Tuesday and Wednesday were rough, every day since has gotten better. i started my journey at 254lbs and I am currently rocking it out at 240lbs. I started walking 2 miles a day, joined a gym and signed up for a 5k run in November. I really want this to work and I know that how well this works is entirely up to me. I have my first fill scheduled for April 27. So, for now I am on mushies and soft food. I keep my shakes on hand because they are handy and after 6 differnt kinds, I finally found one I can stomach. Small meals work for me, I can not eat very much and I stay full for a few hours, sucking down the Water (joy). I am glad I found this site and am looking forward reading more for useful help...I am also on MFP user name lizard0103!

Well congrats Liz..... I was banded at 7:10am on the same day. Dr. James Harris in Wilmington,NC. No complications, and have'nt needed any pain meds at all since the second day. Had my first post op visit yesterday and my weight is down from a pre op of 288 to 264. My first fill is scheduled for May 9th. From my point of view shakes have been OK supplemented by clear low fat chicken broth and lots of Propel Water. Yesterday I got the go ahead to start some low fat cream based soups(blended smoothly in my bullet) and apple sauce. Mentally,I'm still pretty upbeat. Hope you continue to do well, and if I can do anything to help you....just sing out!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
