No Pop Ever. Really?

Recommended Posts

I gave up diet soda. My sucess in this journey was more important than something that is not good for me.

I gave it up about a week bwfore surgery, which means almost a year ago. I feel so much better without it, I really dont miss it at all. I have two iced teas with slenda a day a the rest of the time Water. Once you get over the initial craving, you will feel better. Its just like what you will start to do with food. Once you start to not eat as much, you will soon begin to not need as much. Its retraining your head and your body.

I gave it up long before I was banded.

But I do drink beer! Not a lot, and never with food. I've gone to ball games and had 2-3 for the day.

Slow and easy, and always on a empty stomach.

I told my Dr. He just looked at the ceiling shaking his head.

I used to set my clock by Dt Pepsi. I thought it would impossible to live without. I weaned my self down and had my "last" diet pepsi the day before my pre-surgery liquid diet. I haven't even noticed it is gone! I drink a ton of Water and some of the 20 oz single drink packets (crystal light, dt snapple) but dilute them in 32 oz water. I do some of the Dt Gatorade (G2). The G2 in the 32 oz is good the G2 in 24 oz is very salty!

Why is that we all drank diet sodas and we were still heavy?? I think the artificial sweetner in them makes it worse for us. I digress....

I drank Dr Pepper like nobody's business before surgery. I quit about 3 months before surgery and haven't looked back. I tried a cream soda once, my boyfriend brought home this yummy looking old fashioned bottle of them and I had to try it. Yeah, no. Hurt like hell.

I also do the sweet tea or Water, can't say I miss it at all now. A cold glass of Water is so much more refreshing.

My doctor said no soda unless it has sat out long enough to go completely flat. YUK! I wasn't a big soda drinker, but I LOVE my sweet tea. That has been a big adjustment to have unsweet tea. Probably the hardest thing for me to date. However after my nutritionist showed that my two McD's sweet teas a day was adding 560 calories a day to me, I want to have my calories in a different way!!! I won't even get started on my iced coffees.......

I still occasionally have a diet coke, but have usually switched to iced tea or Water when out. I don't think I was told no pop ever...but the carbonation can be uncomfortable. It depends on the type of day I'm having.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
