First All Day Trip Away From Home.

Recommended Posts

hi all. Yesterday was my first day away from the house . I had my post op appointment with my surgeon. He practises in the city which is nearly two hours travel for us. I was concerned about how i was going to manage with fluids while away. my husband would need to have lunch somewhere and i knew i had to go prepared.

I bought some cuppa Soup mix. took it with me, asked for hot Water and a disposable cup, and had my lunch while hubby ate chicken burgers, chips, you name it, he had it. Im always cross that he never seems to put on much weight at all . Not fair.lol...but thats life.

Anyway, so we sat together and had our lunch. What was amazing for me was the fact that i never for one moment wanted to share his lunch. no tummy growls, no salivating, lol. i just went ahead in anticipation of my own meal. ..and whats more i enjoyed it.

It just shows how we can get to really appreciate what we can eat... even though we are very restricted.like i said, i enjoyed my lunch and it kept me going. i do hope that this appreciation of every mouthful stays with me now for the rest of my life. its quality not quantity.

Incidently, my surgeon was so happy. we were both excited by my first weeks results. i dont think it happens all the time that there is such a profound change in ones body after surgery but i was very lucky to have it. So... another hurdle jumped for me. Fortunately i love Soup and i love to experiment . i prefer stronger taste over quantity. if my taste buds are satisfied then my stomach is satisfied.

just thought id share. .my first major hurdle out from the sanctity of my home.

Good for you! In the beginning when I first started having food I made sure that I packed my little container of Boar's Head turkey, some aged white cheddar and baby carrots before we headed out.I totally get your strong flavor over quantity and that's just what that meal did for me. Funny, that was my staple lunch for months and haven't had it since way back when!

it sounds delicious. i live in country australia so i dont have the access to these wonderful foods that you just mentioned. were the carrots tinned or did you cook them before you left?? i just love cheeses. can you tell me?? what is boars head turkey?? a certain type of deli meat ?? it sounds great.

im still on liquids at the moment. im finding though that i can introduce lots of different things into my broth.. and really loving it. after friday this week i can start introducing a bit more subtance into my Soups. im about to go lunch. that will consist of... tinned Soup for base. pumpkin maybe?/ some cold potato, greek yoghurt, bonox, a raw Tomato home grown, some garlic powder, a little beef consomme., a little lemon juice and some pepper.also water.( get right consistancy i blend it all well, then put in a pot to ''cook'' for about 5 minutes. there will be enough there for at least two meals. Whats more i feel satisfied. if there isnt quite enough flavour i will introduce some med salsa and perhaps some tomato concentrate. heaps of flavour.. yummm

Boar's Head is a brand. I love their honey maple turkey and ham! I was eating the carrots raw in the beginning. Now I am hooked on cooked carrots. I slice them long and thin and bake them with a little cooking spray and salt and pepper. I love asparagus and zuchinni cooked the same way and broiled at the end to crisp them up a bit.

You sound like you got your Soups down! I love Soup and make a big pot every weekend.

Enjoy your lunch! I am just about ready for bed!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
