Okay fellow Banders... I found out a month ago that I need to submit 6 month diet paperwork to UMR <<who are these people.>>although, we signed up with United Healthcare Choice Plus.

I have been on a diet since October and last month would have been my last month...however, I recently switched surgeons and I'm not exactly sure what details should be present on this six month diet plan paperwork. If you have done this before can you give me an idea of what information was included in your 6 month paperwork, I would be very grateful. UMR is not giving out alot of information on the topic.

Furthermore, I've lost about 18 lbs in that 6months is that a good thing..... for the insurance company I mean.

Thanks!

Has your diet in the past 6 months been documented with your physician? All insurances are different. I needed 6 months of weigh ins documented with my doctor. After that your doctor can fax over your info to your insurance company. You need to contact your ins comp and find out exactly what they require for you to move forward with your surgery. Again, they are all different. Have you had this diet documented at all, like weight watchers, Jenny Craig, etc? Some companies will accept this as the 6 months. Don't forget the 6 months has to be 6 consecutive months so make sure you don't miss any appointments. Hope this helped a little.

Yeah, my nutritionist did the bulk of the documentation, but I did report to my physician monthly. I did a low calorie program... 1200 daily calories. All of that is documented. I just wanted to know if there is anything else its supposed to say?

To be honest.. I did not even follow a diet.. Bad, I know.. when i went to the doctors each month I would just make sure I stayed at the same weight.. i had to have a gall bladder sono, an egd, and bunches of other random tests. when all my paperwork was submitted my insurance company would not make a decision unless i lost 13 pounds.. I did it in under two weeks.. got approved 2 days later and had surgery 1 week later=) .. Btw the 6months flyyyyyyyy byy!! literally!! Good Luck!! =)

You are so lucky! So when your paperwork was submitted and they told you to lose 13 lbs you just lost the weight really quickly without having to go on another 6 month diet? What? *crosses arms* Im so jealous.

I also have UHc and my card says umr. I just finished with my 6 mo diet, during that Time I actually gained wieght for 3 months lost 10 in one month then gained about 7 back over the last two months. I also had to do a psyc eval. After te psyc eval my surgeons office submitted everything and I was approved in about a week. So I'm wondering if you were given some wrong info? Cause I didn't have to do anything as far as submitting paperwork. Good luck!

My insurance company required documented doctors visits. I also had co-morbidities. I pretty much did not lose a thing in those six months. (Mine did not have to be consecutive). My surgeon's office submitted all paperwork for me to my insurance company. Do you have a patient liason to refer to at your surgeon's office? If so I would check with them.

Best of luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
