Conflicting Information - I'm Confused

Recommended Posts

I'm about a month out from surgery. The first week I lost 11 pounds because I had no hunger at all. The next three weeks I lost just two pounds total. I'm scheduled for a possible first fill in a few days.

I've been told that it might take four-five fills before I get any restriction. I've also read that the most weight loss occurs in the first few months after surgery. Do most people just white-knuckle it until they hit the green zone? How do people lose so much without restriction? Do some lose very little and really hit their stride in four-five months? I guess I don't know what to expect... Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I read that people lose the bulk of their weight during the beginning stages of surgery .... I interpretted that as within the first 9-12 months after surgery since a lot of the studies that I looked at viewed patients 2 and 5 years out. I think since the band is a lifelong "appliance" ... the first 9-12 months seems like its appropropriate to call the first few months after the procedure.

At least that's what Im telling myself B)

In my case, yes I white-knuckled it until the band started to work. I actually gained weight 2 months after surgery, where you only lost 2 lbs. My Dr. said not to worry. He knew I was not good at dieting, self control, etc., and explained to me just how the whole process works.

That's why it's referred to "Bandster Hell"

Also, the more you have to loose, the more you will drop in those early months.

This is what's going on with me...I see all kinds of people loosing 60+ pounds in a matter of 2-3 months and wonder, how is that possible? I haven't lost a pound in fact I more than likely gained who knows...I get my second fill tomorrow...my first one gave me no restriction. I've talked to many people who told me that they started off just like I did, and it wasn't until 4-5 months or more later, that they actually had restriction and lost the most weight...just look at B-52...he is a success and it sounds like he lost the same way we are in the beginning.

I just had my first fill today and I actually had gained a little weight. However I'm trying not to get discouraged because many people have said it may take a few fills before you get your sweet spot. I have faith this will work. I am just happy I feel SOME restriction now. BTW, I received 5.5 cc today. I'm happy :-)

5.5cc can be quite an initial kick for a 1st fill. Unless you have a large band. Either way, follow your Dr.'s instructions following a fill, and be careful.

Bypass patients lose a lot during the first few months. Bandsters, not always so much. I didn't really start losing until about 4-5 months post-op when my fills really kicked in. My surgeon didn't have me dieting. Bands don't do anything until they are adjusted properly. He said to expect me to lose before then was just torture.

Yeah wow they gave me 3ccs for my first fill. I wonder how much they will be giving me tomorrow...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
