Catholic? What are you giving up during Lent???

Recommended Posts

I'm going to give up being "mean"... That might not sound like a lot but it's odd to me how many times a day I can be mean or bitchy or critical to someone else.

I've given up coffee several times. It was sort of funny, when ever I would forget that I'd given it up, I would always spill the cup, knock it right over. Interesting that.

Wow, external force to help with Lent, lol.

I think that I am going to give up eating Snacks past 8pm. It's something that I should do anyway, so it's partially selfish, but since I can't do it for myself, maybe I can do it for a higher power. Here's to March 1st!

I'm Christian in the most basic sense of the word, but I don't go to church.

Tommy, I will so pray for you. So ok, I don't pray in a Christian sense, but I do pray in a worldly way. I know how much you love the Peanut Butter. I want to join in on lent. I'm not religious, but I wanna play too! I will have to think of something that will be hard for me and try not to make it too easy on myself....I will post again when I figure it out...hmmmm

Dammnit he stole my thunder :/

I gave up lent for Lent about 18 years ago. *chuckle*

You ever hear someone refer to themselves as a recovering Catholic? That's me.

It's not that I have anything against Catholicism (my father is very devout). It's just that I disagree with a lot of the rules that the Catholic church preaches, so I disengaged myself from it, and looked for something that actually made me feel spiritual and happy.

When I was a kid, we used to give up snacking after dinner, which was horrible because we were a popcorn kinda family :/

For me it obviously has nothing to do with being Catholic. Never was, never will be, 'cause it doesn't work for me.

Lent for me is sort of mixed. On the one hand it is about thanksgiving, and appricatiating all that I have. I do this by giving up a favorite vice to show my apprication for all that I do have.

And i think a little volentary deprivation is good for the soul, it builds strength and resilliance. It also builds willpower and character.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
