Help! Wavering With Hypoglycemia Six Days Postop

I had my surgery this past Monday (today is Saturday) for a slipped lap band. My band had been slipped for a long time but wasn't showing very well on testing. Anyway, I'm really having a hard time with basically Protein drinks and broth. I was told to drink some milk when I get hypoglycemic and to chew a glucose tablet. As of two days ago, I feel like I'm in a constant state of hypoglycemia with weakness, sweating, and dizziness. I just finally added some Peanut Butter to my Protein Drink in the blender with milk so hopefully that will bring me out of it for the morning. As of this Monday (two days away) I get to have thinned oatmeal or maltomeal, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, pureed Soups (per nutritionist: creamed Soups pureed), and thinned corn grits. I'm seriously considering moving on to that phase today, two days early, as I know the little bit of carbs will help my hypoglycemia. Does anyone have any insights that might help me?

Six years ago when I had my original band, which was put in my another facility/doctor, I felt the exact same way and didn't pull out of it until i went on to pureed food. I specifically remember pureeing a can of campbells vegetable Soup (can't remember if it was vegetable beef though) and I immediatelly felt better with more energy. I'm also so sick of all the sweet Protein Drinks.

Call your surgeon's office and speak with the nutritionist. There might be a glucose paste you can use or something.

Just a thought it could be RHG reactive hypoglycemia. I was having problems starting out a few months ago. I was banded in Oct 2011 i also have fibro but my sugar started dropping i went through 3 weeks of checking my sugar to really see what was going on. Sometimes what happens is our sugar goes crazy post surgery (not just lap band any abdominal) what we need to do is eat regularly never eat A carb on its own always follow with a Protein. Google RHG it will give some good tips to ask your dr. HTH

After 9 days of a liquid post-op diet, I began having low sugar levels.....like 50. I called the dietian and she asked me a few questions (making sure I wasn't having any swelling ) and then allowed me to move up to the mushie stage...that did it....now everything is back to normal.....

Give your sugeons office a call first......you don't want to jump ahead and then have bigger issues.

Yeah I'm trying really hard not to move ahead too early. I talked to the on-call physician at the hospital since the clinic doesn't actually have anyone you can talk to on the weekend. She said that I need to actually include some Peanut Butter into my smoothies to help my level. At first she said to put some sugar on my tongue when the symptoms happen but when I told her I already was using glucose tablets then she suggested the peanut butter thing. Everything I've been using has been very low sugar or sugar-free per the nutritionist, but I think I need to go get some things with a little real sugar in them. I think I'm going to at least pick up some fudgesickles or popsickles.

how awful to have to go through this. im sure that you are right and its hypoglycaemia. i remember on high Protein, low carb diets years ago i was the same.

i was banded just over a week ago and ive had milk with my Protein shakes...starting from day two im glad i did. are you having greek yoghurt as well? i find that making a skim milk, greek yoghurt with protein vanilla and Decaf coffee makes a great drink. i reckon you would have already been down this road before and know about it?? im sure its helped me though, having yoghurt from the second day with skim milk. i would have been suffering the same way as well.

Thanks Judy. I'm going to dry that tomorrow for sure. I don't know if I have any Decaf in the kitchen but maybe just a little regular coffee won't hurt things. It's been so long since I went through this that I forgot what recipes to use. Everything I've come across is so sickenlingly and artifically sweet that by now I could just cry at the thought of one more day of this day. I'm trying really hard to be strong though.

dacer123 ..well, if you like coffee this is the best way to go. the greek yoghurt is really good. i put a lot in mine. ive gone through 2/3 tub in just over a week... thats a lot.

im not finding my Protein sweet and im no sweet tooth. i think its because of the yoghurt and the coffee. good luck with it. i hope you like it.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
