Had Lap Band Surgery 15 Days Ago

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am 40 years old. I had lap band surgery 15 days ago, on March 15, 2012. I was told that I should be able to return to work the following Monday (March 19). I've tried to have a positive attitude, but so far things aren't going so great. I was told that the surgery was "perfect!" I was sick and hurting all weekend following the surgery. On Monday, I went to a local emergency room and was given a one liter of iv fluids then was told to go back to my surgeon. My doctor removed the initial fill, approximately 1cc. I was still having problems with burping, so the doctor suggested having an upper GI exam. After drinking the OptiRay solution, the radiologist stopped the exam because very little of the solution was dripping thru to my stomach. I was re-admitted to the hospital due to dehydration. The following day (Tuesday, March 20) I had a laproscropic lap band exploratory surgery. I felt better within the next few hours. I was home the rest of the week. I went back to work on Monday, March 26 - a week later than orginally intended. I worked one day then had to go to the emergency room the following day due to chest pain. Turns out there were not problems with the heart (yeah!), but I was dehydrated again and my potassium was low again. I spent another night in the hospital receiving more IV fluids. I am off work for the rest of the week. Now, I have to go back to my surgeon on Monday due to having a dilated esophagus. It is extremely frustrating to be told that the surgery went so well and yet have had to go back into the hospital twice in less that two weeks time and already be off work at least 15 days longer than planned. I had lost 12 pounds after the first surgery, but I have gained back 3 pounds already.

I wouldn't worry about the weight gain; obviously your body is trying to heal right now. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds awful. Just from what you're describing (and of course I'm no expert or doctor) you aren't drinking enough and it seems like you may need to stay with the Clear Liquids (water, broth) for longer than usual. Keep in touch with your doctors as they will be the best to help you!

I am sorry you are having a difficult time right now. Keep drinking clear liquids. It sounds like you have lots of swelling going on. I hope it calms down soon and your body heals quicker for you. Hang in there!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
