I Think I Made A Mistake

I think I made a mistake getting the lapband . I am losing no weight and always hungry . I

Go to the gym 5 days a week and I'm not losing weight , getting very frustrated . 3 months and only lost 24 pounds . I coulda done that starving myself on my own . All weight loss was in first two weeks when I was in a liquid diet .

This is exactly what I'm going through...I'm almost 2 months out and haven't even attempted to weigh myself because I know I haven't lost. I will find out when I go to the docs...The weight I've lost so far was from exercise before surgery. I have only had one fill so far and can't wait for a second one...I exercise like crazy too...we need both tho...exercise and the band to help our eating...we have to wait for our restriction before we start to loose most of the weight. I know, it sucks! Don't worry though, I have talked to many people who started off this way, and ended up getting to their goal a year later! We will have success too!

The thing is, youre not really correct in expecting weight loss you couldnt achieve reasonably on your own. It wont usually be any faster or more spe tacular. Youre averaging the expected 2lb per week. Where the band really helps is keeping that loss going ALL the way down to goal and keeping it off, rather than losing that 24lb, running out of steam and putting on 30! Tha band does not alter your body, cause malabsorption or make weight loss miraculous, it simply makes ordinary weight loss easier to achieve.

We can do this girls!! How many times have we dieted and lost lots of weight but gained it right back?? Well now we will lose lots of weight but won't gain it back!! It's hard but everytime we have dieted has been hard! WE CAN AND WILL DO THIS!!!!

I don't like quitters or people who give up, BUT I am now convinced, hearing different stories from different people, that some people HAVE made a mistake! and should not have got this surgery.

I'm not sure how they got thru all the pre surgery evals / screening.

This is a major change to one's life and is not for everybody. Sometimes I think people somehow did not understand what they were getting into.

Not saying this is your case, only YOU can make that decision and commitment.

I understand your frustration but u dont really make it clear why u are posting, do u want some support or just to let people know u are giving up.. We can help with support if u give a lot more details than what u have given, how much are u eating, what are you eating, what sort of exercise are you doing, how much fill in your band, do you have an addiction to food, the helpful info lets us existing banders understand what it is you are doing and how u could possibly move forward .. Most people here are long term yo-yo dieters, they lose weight and put it on and more again, a lot of us each used to gain weight every year, so you have the decision .. u stick with it and sort out what the problems are or you quit and stay as you are ..

only after 3 months I doubt you have enough fills in your band.. Lapband can be for some a long slow process, but it doesnt work if u give up on it..

I had a somewhat similar situation. I did, however, in the third month lose 5 lbs but I didn't have any restriction and was always hungry. I just had my fourth fill and am at 5.5 in a 10 cc band and I do have some restriction now. As a matter of fact in one week post this last fill I am down about 4 lbs. Here's what else I did. I googled lap band diet on line and easily found someone who shared their regular food diet (the one past all the liquids and mushies). Although I had very specific diet and instructions on the first two months of eating, I didn't have that for the period where you live with the band daily. When I read this article, I found I was way off on portion sizes, etc. An example....on my diabetic diet, one bread or starch exchange was half an english muffin. On the lap band diet, it was actually half of that, so two bread/starch exchanges should have been 1/4th of an english muffin. So, with the new fill, I also changed my diet and voila, the weight started to come off again, I am not overly hungry and take in about 1000 to 1200 calories per day. I keep it low carb as well. So hang in there, and search for new solutions and keep yourself focused on being patient and working around the problem and you will get there. I think we all think this should work faster but it just doesn't. You have to find what works for you! Good luck.

I can totally relate to the OP ... I only lost 3 lbs in my pre-op diet ... and since the surgery 3 weeks ago I've lost about 5 lbs .... BUT I do know that I havent had a fil yet. AND I just started back exercising last week because I needed to let my body recover from surgery.

I am disappointed with my weight loss, exspecially seeing that so many other ppl have lost 30 lbs or so in my same time frame ... but every body is different. Not to mention, my BMI is 36, so I have less to lose so I guess it's coming off slower.

What's your BMI? And what are you eating? Have you voiced your concerns to your surgeon? Maybe they can accelerate your fills or refer to a nutritionist. My doc has a nutritionist that he requires all patients to see anyway. I have faith that I will see some results but I certainly wont use a 3 month window to decide if Im a success or failure. Give yourself more time.

As mentioned by previous posters if you provide some details we may be able to advise you. I wish doctors were more frank that this is a will power diet at the beginning. I got to restriction after 6 months of fills.

I am a slow loser. I think it is because I had lost 100 pounds presurgery through exercise and diet.

What are you eating? At this point in your journey in my opinion you need to be on a very strick low cal/fat diet. Choosing grilled chicken and not chicken with gravy or cheese, or some sauce. Veggies with herb seasonings and not french fries, or mashed potatos.

What kind of exercise are you doing for how long and how intense? Is it an hour really pushing it so you are tired when you get off; or a gentle stroll for 30 minutes.

Here's what I would do:

1. Get a fill. The lap band requires fine tuning and if you're hungry all the time, you definitely need an adjustment.

2. Look at what you're eating. Are you getting enough Protein? Eating a lot of soft foods that don't keep you satisfied? Keeping a food journal for a few days might help. Try to change things up if you find yourself in an eating rut.

3. What are you doing at the gym? Mostly cardio? Any strength training? If you're not doing any and the doctor says it's ok, I would add some weights to your routine.

4. Keep hydrated.

5. Stop beating yourself up! 24 pounds in three months is pretty darn admirable. This isn't gastric bypass where the weight just falls off.

Keep plugging away and you will get there! Don't give up!

I was advised by a friend who had GB surg 2 yes ago that most bariatric surgery patients enter an "OMG what the heck have I gotten myself into, I've made a big mistake" phase, and with patience and self care it will pass. I have also heard that if you eat too little and think you can go light on exercise because your calories are low, then your metabolism will slow down and you won't lose. I would step up the exercise intensity or frequency AND eat a little MORE so you are not hungry but only healthy foods, get nutritionist help if you can. Track all your food and exercise, I use a tracker app on my iPod touch which is fun and easy. When you are hungry it is hard to maintain a healthy emotional state and think clearly about your progress and make decisions, so resolving that should be your first priority. Hang in there this phase will pass and if you persist the weight will come off, your goal is that it WILL come off NOT that it comes off FAST.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
