On The Losing Wagon Again

Recommended Posts

Well after getting to goal weight a year and a half ago I was doing quite well. Then life hit and slowely I have gained 27 pounds back after losing over 100. Before the new year my band was way too tight that all I could eat was ice cream and shakes. well needless to say that waasnt the best for me, but im 2 1/2 hours away from my fill dr and they only do band fills 2 a month. well I schedualed to have it unfilled but that day in dec it snowed really heavy and closed down the only hwy to get there. so, I decided I could wait a little longer (I had been really tight for 4 months), but one day out of the blue m stomach swelled and it hurt and I couldnt drink. By that night I was in excrusiating pain and couldnt swallow. I called and made an emergancy appointment. They took all the Fluid out but my stomach still stayed swollen. For a couple days I could finally drink smothing and then after about a week I could move to mushies. It probably took about a month for all the swelling to go down and eat normal. Well.... since not being able to eat real food for so many months I maybe enjoyed a little too much. I didnt go crazy but I did crave a lot of sweets and carbs. well last saturday night I weighed myself and I was 27 pounds up from my lowest (goal weight). so i put a plan together. sunday I drank a Protein Shake for every meal and nothing else, monday I did the same, tuesday I received a fill and had 2 Protein Shakes and dinner two eggs blended with mayo into mush, then this morning a Protein shake...and so far with just doing this I am down 7 pounds. I know a good portion of that is Water weight but now Im only 20 pounds till I am back at goal weight. I also am motivated because I will be going on a cruise with my husband to purto rico in august and want to be back in good condition. Not to mention I run a lot of 1/2 marathons (in 2 years ive ran 10 1/2 marathons) and with the extra weight it is making it much more difficult to run and in January Im doing my first full marathon 26.2 miles so I need to be in peak condition. I know Im rambling but for some reason putting my goals and journey out there keeps me more accountable and I always seem to have better success. How are the rest of the may banditos doing to date?

Great that you have nipped your problem in the bud and got back onto the losers bench.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
