Carbs And Protein.....2 Weeks Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Just wondering about your carb intake 2 weeks post op. I am getting anywhere from 65-100g of carbs a day and I feel this may be a little high. I have an email into my nutritionist but I wanted to hear from yall. I'm also getting around 60-75g of Protein a day. I was getting about 75-100g of Protein a day but the PA told me that was too much since I'm not working out yet. With this said I cut back on the Protein shakes but when I did that the weight halted....HELP! I'm freaking out that this is not going to work. I am 2 weeks post op and I have only lost 11lbs :(

Hey Goosie17....be patient. I know its hard, but you are only 2 weeks post-op. I'm only 1 week postop I have only lost 5 pounds but I know I still am retaining Water too. Theses few few weeks need to be about giving our bodies what it needs to heal. And because we are on a liquid/puree/mushie diet, most of our foods will be coming from carbs.

When you get the green light to eat "real" food, then I would suggest you cut back on your carbs. Diabetics must keep their carbs at no more than 125. I was keeping mine at no more than 50 b4 surgery and would like to return to that when I see real food again. My body works nicely at 800cal/60+protein/40carb. I was loosing about a pound a day. But thats me....you should speak with your surgery teams to see what they think. Was your PA for your general practioner or for your surgeon?

I try to eat less than 40 grams of carbs per day. The best thing to do is ask your dietician. I have found they are all different and want you to do different things. I have stuck with <40g carbs and >70g of Protein per day, it's what works best for me. Good luck!

At that point all I was eating was Soup and other liquids so I would have no idea how many carbs/proteins I was getting.

Hey waitingpatiently,

My PA was for my surgeon. She will be the one doing all of my fills and what not. Thanks for the tips

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
