How Much Weight Should I Expect To Lose On The Pre-Surgical Liquid Diet?

Recommended Posts

I start my 14 day liquid diet on Friday, just wondering how much I should expect to lose prior to surgery.

I think it really is an individual thing. I have read some lost 8, 12, 15, or 20 pounds. Some exercised alot and some didn't.

I'm on Day 5 of my pre-op liquid diet and I have lost 8.8 pounds on it, but I haven't yet weighed today. I work out 30 minutes a day on my elliptical. I think the amount of weight you lose also depends on how much you have to lose total. The more weight you have to lose the more you can lose pre-op. It's tough, but you can do it. The first three days were the hardest for me.

for the month before surgery, I lost a little over 20 pounds. 2 weeks were spent eating low cal/low fat, and the last two were pseudo liquid (two Protein Shakes, 2 yogurts, and 1 Protein Bar per day).

for some, loss on the pre-op is hard, but they lose a lot on the post-op liquid. For others, loss on the pre-op is fast, but they lose slower on post-op. I have only lost about 7lb since surgery on 3/20.

I lost 12 pounds...and glad I did. The diet consisted of 3 New Direction Protein Shakes a day. I was not hungry...and quite frankly it was easy as you didn't have to think about shopping or cooking for meals. It was a great jump start!

I second that the more exercise you do the more you will loose. The body is very good at existing on the calories you give it. I highly recommend lap swimming or Water aerobics as they are great for your joints. Most water aerobics groups have flotation belts if you are not a swimmer and the water makes you nervous.

I am on day 9 and have lost 9.8 pounds. It is hard in that today will mark my last day of food. Tomorrow at my preop appointment I am going to talk with my surgeon to see if i can just do three Protein Shakes a day to ensure my liver is small and get ready for the post op diet..

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
