How Does It Feel When You Eat?

Recommended Posts

Alrighty...more questions.

How do you all feel when you eat? Or I guess I should ask...What does it feel like? I have 4.5cc's in my 10cc band. When I eat or drink I can feel the food or liquid from my throat all the way down. It feels like Im swallowing something much larger than I am and it feels like it takes a looooong time to reach where its going.

Its not a "stuck" feeling where it hurts..but it isnt the most comfortable feeling in the world. Today I ate about 1/4 of a burger and 2 french fries (not the best choice, but the only choice). I was full but not like a satisfied full. It was like stuffed full. But not in my stomach, more in my throat and chest..if that makes any sense at all.

That is pretty normal. The food is not going straight through to your stomach so you are not going to feel the fullness there. Full is now a feeling of pressure in the chest and that is a feeling you should try to avoid. Feeling like there is something in your throat is apparently because of pressure on the vagus nerve, it is not actually sitting in your throat but it sure as hell feels like it.

I am so glad you asked this question and someone answered. I am 2 1/2 months out from surgery and I feel this way about 3 days after I have a fill. I haven't understood what was happening. I don't throw up and don't feel like I will. Just that pressure in the lower throat that feels like I am stuffed. I am trying really hard to figure out the feelings around my stomach and eating so I know what I am doing.

I haven't had that feeling in a long time and since I got refilled to 8.5cc (in a 10cc band) on Friday after port revision, I'm feeling that too. I feel like if I eat too much, it's blocking up my throat. And two or three bites are enough to get to that point.

I remember though that it was similar when I was in my green zone before so I know it's normal. Just forgot what it was like and now having to relearn all over again about the signals that the band gives me: to eat slowly, to chew and to stop before I get that 'full throat' feeling.

Wow....your eating solid food? I was on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks post-op, then thicker pudding, yogurt like foods then onto pureed food before finally reaching solid food. You must bad careful cause you are still swollen and healing. This is why you need to be following the diet.

no... sorry... no, ive confused you here.

im not on solids yet. ive made up a meal of babyfood and diluted it a lot... could drink that through a straw... that helped with hunger pains. i do have some greek yoghurt, mixed up with low fat milk and blended with Protein powder. no solids as such. well, if you could call the baby food solids,... but i dont think you could. i enjoy that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
