Generally no, but you need to check with your insurance. Most insurance require a BMI of 40, or a BMI of 35 if you have at least 2 obesity related major health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, etc.

I just went to my first appointment after introduction session.

MY BMI is 38 but I have high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea.

I have tried to lose the wieght for years.

My Dr said band me.

I am hoping I am making a choice to give me a better quality of life with out all the pills.

I dont want to tell anyone about it as they reaction has been you can do it your self.

or you dont loook big enough I climb stairs I am out of breath.

the tough part is all my wieght is in the belly. so people some how think I should not get this done.

I was diagnosed with MS last year and my Doctor was clear with me loose the weight or lose your livelihood. I am a low BMI lap-bander right about 32. The lack of insurance insurance coverage didn't stop me. I am a self-pay. Had the procedure at DayOne Health in Chicago (one of the best) 13K with all fills paid for the first year. Just filed my tax return and was able to claim the surgery- yeah to my CPA... my refund without claiming surgery was about $500- with the surgery a little more than 4K. 9K out of pocket for a surgery that will save my life- doesn't get much better than that. :)

As jayeedee said, you need to check with your insurance to know for sure.

My insurance revised its policy for lap band last fall: BMI > 30 with one comorbidity. Prior to the revision, it was BMI > 35 with one comorbidity. There are other requirements as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
