I'm new to this group. Like most of you I'm scared, scared of failing. But that is another issue. I have my cardio and psych visits scheduled and I'm self pay so I'm hoping to have the surgery in April or May depending on my work schedule. I have a lot of questions but my first is has anybody gone into this already a Vegan? I told my suregeon up front that I will not eat any animal based foods. Just want some thoughts and personal stories. Thanks for sharing. Buffalo Gyrl

i'm lacto ovo vegetarian - and good thing i am because once i hit restriction i found that dairy (yogurt, low fat string cheese, etc.) all go down easier than the soy fake meats which from my understanding get stuck the same as real meat.< /p>

Allison, thanks for the info. I don't eat a lot of processed foods so that is not my worry. I eat a lot of fresh veges, how do u do with those? Also howdid u do liquid? I asked if I can juice my veges and fruit and add some vegan Protein and dr..said not right after surgery just wants protein shakes....honestly I hate that crap i much rather eat real food vs some chemical crap....

lol i'm not what you would call a healthy vegetarian - i just loathe meat/seafood and think it's disgusting. Prior to surgery i ate all kinds of junk food/pizza/pasta/mexican - i just didn't eat it with any meat/seafood. now, by force, i cannot eat the processed stuff and can only eat the fruits/dairy- yogurt/string cheese, Protein shakes, and some salad/veggies depending on the day - i think you will do well with this surgery - i find the more natural the food the easier it goes down

keep in mind i did not have restriction until about 4.5 months in = so prior to then i could eat about anything - it takes a while to hit restriction in many cases and up until then it's all will power and you may have a couple months ahead of you of eating whatever you want.

ChubbyCharle, you sound a lot like me....love juicing and whole foods. Have you seen the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead ( streaming free on Netflix) and have you read Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman?

Glove, yes I have seen and read both and had the chance to meet dr. Bernard from forks over knives. Since he is local to the DC area.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
