Swallowing Medications

Recommended Posts

I was banded today and told to resume a couple of my medications-- they are both tablets. One is small, so it was no problem swallowing. The other is quire large, and I felt a little pain when it went down! It is time released, so cutting it in half is not an option. Wondering if it is stuck in there.....how will I know? Will I throw it up? Help!

If it is stuck, generally you won't be able to swallow your spit. It may have stuck a little bit on the way down. That can cause some irritation. You might ask if it is available in non-extended release, and you can do two doses a day.

If you can, take it in the evening. Many bandsters are tighter in the mornings.

I've been stuck three times now -- all on chicken -- maybe I've found the one thing I can't eat! You will know if you're stuck, it's painful in your chest!

One thing my doc didn't warn me about and that was my meds. I used to take about 9 different meds - 4 of those being for blood pressre (which I don't take anymore). I took them all normally after my surgery and for the past 2 1/2 yrs. I've never had any problems with pills but I know people do have problems.

Yes, if they're stuck, you will feel it for longer than a few minutes. You'll feel it unil it's either down or up.

Marci... this is something that i neglected to talk with my dr about... i take one olmetec a day... for hyper tension. im concerned that i wont be able to swallow it. im going to have to crush it up i think and add it to some milk or yoghurt. im really concerned about the meds getting stuck as well. i dont know yet how well they will crush up... or how it will taste even. and, of course, im hoping that eventually as the weight comes off i can throw the tablets away.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
