duxtupelo 0 Posted March 16, 2012 I am new! I just had my pre-op appt this morning and my surgery is set for March 28th. The option of the band with plication was brought to my attention. I am having my surgery at OSU and they are conducting a research study and i was asked if I would like to be a part of it. I have been searching for people who have had it done and what their experience with it has been. I have found study's and results on regular plication, but I want to hear from somebody who has actually had it.
DesertDog 2 Posted March 17, 2012 My doctor has switched to performing the Lap Band with Gastric Plcation. He states that band slippage is reduced as well as giving you a smaller stomach. I had my surgery on 3/6 and have been happy with the whole experience. I'd say go for it if they are giving you the option.
jasonl1973 22 Posted March 17, 2012 I had it done on 2/17. I can feel myself full first on liquids then puree quick. I have lost 35 pounds in the 4 weeks and go in for my first post op on 3/26. Can keep you posted
Talk teacher 11 Posted March 17, 2012 I also had both done on feb 21st. I have been very happy. I have had no issues other than adjusting to such small portions which is an issue with my head and not my procedure. I measure everything and think there is no way this will be enough, then when I can't finish I am amazed. I love the choice I have made and would recommend to anyone. 1 Holly Dolly reacted to this
Tahneesamson 41 Posted March 18, 2012 I get my banded plication on 4/2. I'm so excited, mine is part of a trial as well which is a little scary, but people seem to be doing really well with it
duxtupelo 0 Posted March 18, 2012 Thanks guys for the info. I have done a lot of searching online this weekend and have found a bit of info. I have also seen that people seem to be pretty successful. I have decided to go ahead and do the banded plication procedure. Since the plication is a newer procedure I am just a bit concerned of the longtime affects. Not enought to stop me from doing it though! 10 more days I am so excited and nervous and trying to keep my expectations in check!
txdee 23 Posted April 16, 2012 If it is a trial or research study, does that mean it is free or reduced cost? Seems like there are so few doctors that even do it! But it does sound like it is the best of both worlds!
cindy54 0 Posted April 16, 2012 After 20 days in the hospital (and twice in ICU) after having a lapband placed, I STRONGLY suggest that any surgery be considered very carefully. I researched the lapband for three years before my surgery and the procedure and complications almost killed me. God be with you all.
txdee 23 Posted April 16, 2012 Sorry to hear that cindy54. Was it just a fluke, doctor error, or some particular reason that it went so wrong? I was wondering about such stories, because I think everything I've read since this weekend was so positive.
cindy54 0 Posted April 16, 2012 The surgeon never gave me a satisfactory answer as to what went wrong. My friends told me I should sue him. He wanted to put Fluid in the band during surgery and everything I had read said that there was a waiting period of six weeks. Unfortunately, I trusted his judgement and I believe that's where the problem started. I began to vomit and went back into the hospital the next day after having spent the night of the surgery in the hospital because I had sleep apnea. Then I got aspiration pneumonia and went into ICU. I was back on a regular ward for a few days and remained nauseated and then he came and told me that the band had slipped and part of my stomach had died and that they needed to do an open surgery to take the lapband out. When I was awake, I realized that they weren't able to close my abdomen because of a bad infection. Back into ICU. Like I said 20 days in the hospital and I had a visiting nurse for two months until my abdomen closed . I still had a pleural effusion three months after the pneumonia. Think carefully and take care. JackiFL 4 Posted April 19, 2012 I had the gastric band with plication on 12/12/11. Started at 310; my last weigh-in I was 262. The benefits of both - I'm glad I'm part of this study as well. Did you opt for it? Jacki
