tammyg1969 7 Posted March 13, 2012 Good morning, I've been on the Atkins diet now for about a week and a half to prepare for surgery on Thursday and I haven't lost any weight at all. No carbs, no fast food, I'm doing so good...Granted I'm not exercising as much as I should, but I am exercising more than I ever have, and still nothing has come off...I don't understand why my body is fighting this so bad. Now I'm worried that once I get this done I won't lose weight. Is that even possible? I'm doing so good, without any results...I'm at a loss.
newlife4nekaylyn 2 Posted March 13, 2012 Right before i had surgery they put me on an all liquid diet that was Protein Shakes and crystal light. Thats what i lived on for two weeks. Not fun but i lost 10lbs a week. They said that i had to do that so my liver would shrink and it would make surgery easier. I don't really know what other doctors tell you to do but if your really worried i would call your doctors office and talk to them about it. I know mine are always willing to help no matter how crazy my questions are. Good luck!
tammyg1969 7 Posted March 13, 2012 That's what I've noticed with other newbies, is they were all put on a liquid diet, and mine put me on Adkins. Weird?!?!
newlife4nekaylyn 2 Posted March 13, 2012 I really wish i knew what to say here but i haven't herd of a Dr putting any one that close to surgery on Adkins. I would for sure call your doctor with your worries and concerns that's what they are there for. And they also do the liquid because after surgery you cant eat real food for like two months. And the liquid kind of prepared me for that let me know if there is anything i can do to help you

tammyg1969 7 Posted March 13, 2012 I think what I'll do even though my surgery is Thursday is just go on liquids now until then. Can't hurt anything. 1 Holly Dolly reacted to this
newlife4nekaylyn 2 Posted March 13, 2012 I would call your doctor first you dont want to do anything that might mess things up for you before your surgery. Its pretty important to listen to what the dr says.
Toddy 758 Posted March 13, 2012 I know a lot of people have had great success on Atkins (while they stay on the diet anyway). However, I wasn't one of them. I followed the Atkins diet religiously (NO CHEATING WHATSOEVER) for two months and only lost 4 pounds, while doing the same thing my husband lost 25 pounds. Looking back, I think it was the lack of Portion Control that killed me. While I was only eating the foods that I was supposed to eat, and I was definitely in ketosis, I was eating a lot. In my humble opinion, I think portion control, along with decent food choices, are the most important keys to successful weight loss. 1 Holly Dolly reacted to this
dhales 98 Posted March 13, 2012 My doctor doesn't do the liquid diet prior to surgery either. He just wanted me on a high protein/low carb diet (kind f like Atkins). He also wanted me to get in two shakes a day. However 48 hours before surgery I will be on liquids as the doctor's nurse said he would have to "hand express undigested solids" from my stomach if I am not on liquids 48 hours in advance...so gross. So I will comply...I don't want the poor guy to have to do that.
DonnaMP 13 Posted March 13, 2012 No real food for 2 months? That's odd.
newlife4nekaylyn 2 Posted March 13, 2012 like solid foods i could eat mushy but they told me not to go to fast with it because the band and the port needed time to heal before the stomach could start to prosses whole foods again. seemed to work out for me. and im sure it wasnt a full two months its was from the first part of september to the end of october but again i started liquids in august
honk 780 Posted March 13, 2012 My question would be portion side. I have never done Atkins so forgive me if I make any mistakes. A serving size of red meat is 3 or 4 oz. A hamburger at a restaurant however could easily be 8 oz. So you may think you are following the program but are in reality eating way to much. Are you measuring your food? I highly recommend buying a digital food scale. Availble at Walmart or Target for $20. You will need it post op (at least my doctor says to measure all your mushies or solid Proteins to 3 oz). Again eating out (and I don't know if you are or not) makes it really hard to know how much you are getting. I once ordered a grilled chicken and veggie sandwich (pre surgery) at a pizza joint and asked for lite cheese. They asked me how many slices I wanted, I asked "Well how many do you normally use". They said 3!!!! That's like 240 calories and 21 g of fat. Way more than I would have thought. I said one slice thanks. Also for Breakfast bacon has a lot less fat and calories than sausage. chicken breast has a lot less fat and caloris than red meat or pork. As to a previous statement about the post op diet. My doctor had me on Clear Liquids 7 days, full liquids 7, thin mushies 7, thicker mushies 7, and then back to full solids.
tammyg1969 7 Posted March 13, 2012 I'm questioning my serving size after thinking about it...For Breakfast I have an Atkins shake, lunch chicken breast deli lunch meat and lf shring cheese (not sure how much I'm eating) I do need to get a scale, then for dinner lately I've been making salads, but that might be where I'm messing up. I made a taco salad one night, chef salad another. Maybe I'm having to much meat. I can have all the green veggies I want. Well, there's only 2 days til surgery. I'll get a scale and do better on my portions. Hopefully that will help.

Depending on your cycle you may be retaining some fluids... Especially If you've increased salt intake (which can happen on low carb). Pre op diet throws many women's cycles off from what I've researched .. Especially those who have pcos. Hang tough! You may wake up tomorrow and be down ten lbs! Maybe stick to the diet and stay off the scale til the day of surgery?
