Hello everyone,

I am hoping you guys can give me some advice. Trying to get insurace approval will take too long. I too have tried every diet and diet program, but don't have any professional documention on it, other than 2 knee surgeries and am facing knee replacement if I don't get this weight off. Anyway, I have decided to self pay and want to have the surgery done quickly. I have noticed a lot of messages talk about going to Mexico. Any suggestions on Dr.'s or websites I can research? Also, if anyone has gone to Mexico to have the procedure can you give me some feedback as to the care and quality of service you received.

Thanks!

Janet

Hi Janet,

I have heard excellent things about Dr. Kuri. His website is:

www.lapbandsurgery.com

I had called Dr. Kuri's office after getting denied by my insurance and they quoted me $8,750.00 for the deluxe package and would pick me and my Mom up at San Diego Airport and return us after 3 days (2 in hospital, 1 in hotel). I live in Northern California, so I was able to get flights on SouthWest for 2 at under $200.00.

Dr. Kuri's website claims he has done over 700 Lap-Band procedures, but I am sure that it is up to over a 1,000 by now. I was scheduled for 2/23, so that was 3 weeks out from speaking with his office.

In the end, my original surgeon was able to convince my insurance company to pay and I was banded on 2/3/04, but when I called back to cancel my 2/23 date with Dr. Kuri, his office was still very nice and professional. They were very happy that I had gotten insurance approval and told me if I had any questions or required assistance with fills to give them a call. I thought they were very professional and nice.

Hope you get the information you are looking for... Take Care,

Hey Vols Fan --

There is a great mexican bandsters group at Yahoo. They have a file with names of doctors, costs and in some cases websites. Go the Groups section and in the search window, enter mexican bandsters and you should find them.

Before I went with a surgeon here, I was planning on going to Dr. Rumbault in Monterrey. I'd researched several and he seemed excellent.

Go Dawgs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
