DO NOT DRINK WHILE EATING...Why?

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill the day after Valentines (2-15-06),

On my fill instruction sheet it says:

DO NOT DRINK WHILE EATING; Do not drink 30 minutes before eating, while you are eating and for 3O minutes after eating.

Is this just after fills or am I suppose to follow this rule from here on out and why? SOS (sorry so slow)

Because drinking DURING eating will flush your food on through, which allows for eating MORE at a sitting and defeats the purpose of the band. Also, IF you have eaten good hard Proteins (as recommended) you could dump the liquids on top and wind up having it come back up due to restriction. It's a tough habit to break for most all of us, but it makes sense that you want the food to stay above the band as long as possible to create that sense of not needing to eat more. :welldone2:

And yes, it's here on out..

theres one other reason not. it is believed that you could stretch your pouch.

inamed recomends waiting 1-2 hours after eating. theres no way id make it 2 hours.

Not drinking while eating is one of the absolute major bandster rules. I'm really sorry you're this far out and hadn't been told that by your doctor yet. Letha's right, of course (when isn't she =) ), drinking while you eat just flushes everything through the band and makes it like you didn't even have it. And drinking after you eat does the same thing. You want the food on top of the band for as long as possible so you feel "full".

By the way, I was in the fill center at SCOR on 2/15 too. =) I love those guys.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Jonathan ....You were in the fill center at SCOR on 2/15 ? I was there at 12:30 when the electricity went out. They gave me my fill but were having to send other appointments away until later.

And I am sure I was told many times..I had so many things to process at one time it didnt sink in...I think I was probably trying to deny it.

Jen -

Most docs allow drinking up until eating. If you're very tight and the liquid doesn't drain through it would be better to wait until the pouch is empty before eating, but if the liquids are running through that shouldn't impact eating directly after.

Drinking sooner than 1 hour after eating can help wash food out of the pouch faster, which means you're hungry again sooner.

Of course you should always follow your doc's advice, but you will find that there are a lot of differing professional opinions out there. :)

This is another topic, like pre-op/post-op diet, that seems to vary from Dr. to Dr. My Dr. & nutritionists guidelines are "no drinking for 15 minutes before or one hour after".

When you have good restriction... YOU CANNOT DRINK when you eat... it will come right back at ya!! Not a good feeling at all. After a while you will get used to not drinking with your meals.

Even before I had my band, my nutrionist always told me never to eat and drink at the same time, and this is valid for everybody I guess, whether they are obese or not, as drinking will make your digestion process much faster and evidently as soon as you stop feeling full (your stomach empties so much faster if you put liquid along with chewed food in it), you will start thinking about food again.

I know, it's a nasty habit we get since we're children, and allover the world, having a glass in front of your dish on the table. We should avoid that, and it is easy to do it at home: no drinking during meals; either you drink before (1 hour, 30 minutes at least) or after (same period of time).

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
