72 Hours Post-Op... Over Did It!

Recommended Posts

So today I went to my surgeon for my first follow up and he placed me at Stage 2 which is the full liquid diet. For dinner I opted to have strained cream Soup made with skim milk. I ate about a small Cereal bowl portion and the next thing I know, I'm coughing some of it up and feel completely, disgustingly stuffed! I really didn't expect for soup to have this effect on me. Has anyone else had that uh-oh moment?? And how do you get it to go down? I sat up perfectly straight, sipped very lightly on Water, and walked in hopes of getting it down. I definitely need to be mindful of ALL portions I eat, including liquid. You live and learn!

the last thing you want to do is drink water! When was your surgery date?

I am an old dog here but if I go too fast I can get overfull on anything...even water...the only thing I would add is chew a couple of those papaya enzyme tablets (Walmart or anywhere) but do not drink Water etc...sometimes you just have to wait it out in pain or yak it up....I was a slow learner on that...

Despite the fact that I have 'no restriction', I feel very full off soup! I could only drink a few ounces at a time when I was as far out as you...a while

Despite the fact that I have 'no restriction', I feel very full off soup! I could only drink a few ounces at a time when I was as far out as you...a whole bowl was def not happening! Drink veryyy slowly and assess how you feel every few sips. If you feel like you CAN stop, do. Come back to it if youre feeling unsatisfied.

Thanks Mck, I will definitely be more mindful and pay attention as I go along. I had hardly been getting my fluids in and I think I just forced it down really quick in hopes of getting my ounces in on top of the Soup tasting SO good! I have to concentrate on really paying attention to my stomach and pacing myself.

Soup tastes sooo amazing after being on clears!! I dont blame you! Over near the kids plastic plates etc at target, I picked up a 2 pack of tiny bowls for under bucks...i fill these about halfway and its perfect! At ikea I found some that I imagine are for salsa or something, too. Just using smaller scale items like this really helps me a lot. If I looked at this amount of soup in a big bowl that used to be brimming with cereal, I think id get awfully sad!

LOL @ being awful sad for the tiny amount of Soup in the big bowl! I know exactly what you mean! I will have to stop at Target today and grab some of those kiddie sized bowls so I don't have this portioning problem again. Thanks so much for the tip!

My doctor had me on clears for 7 days. Perhaps 3 days was not enough for you. I would do clear for a couple more days before moving to full liquids.< /p>

I got overly full on Water yesterday and felt that same way. Just a reminder to slow down. It's hard to do when you are starving!! Slow and steady wins the race. ALong with buying smaller plates and bowls, I also bought the toddler forks and spoons just to help me slow down with eating until I am more comfortable with everything!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
