Having A Really Hard Day!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm on the 9th day of pre op diet. I have felt great. The first week was 2 shakes and 1 lean cuisine a day with sugar free popcicles and Jello and broth. Yesterday for week 2 of the pre op diet I had to start the 4 Protein Shakes a day with sugar free popcicles , jello and broth. I feel awful....I'm hungry. Irritable and feel very weak.....I know I only have 5 more days and am trying not to whine but would appreciate some advice!

I guess, all we can say is hang in there! I didn't have to do such a diet but I've heard it's hard....and you're relying on your willpower to keep you on it. But this diet helps get your liver in shape for the surgery (and there have been some posts about how some people didn't get banded because their livers were too fatty). There are good reasons why your doctor wants you to do this, and you can!

I don't know if this will help, but I found in the end that the only thing I could do was just grit my teeth and stick it out. My pre-op diet was 2 weeks of nothing but skim milk and calorie-free liquids. The first 2-3 days nearly killed me, but after that, it did get easier as my body adjusted. It's best to keep busy and keep distracted, but in the end all you can really do is keep reminding yourself that it's only 1 week and that the rewards will be well worth it. Sending good thoughts your way! :)

Your pre-op sounds exactly like my pre-op diet! I don't advocate cheating, but there was one day during the second week I was particularly crazy and I did have an order of egg drop Soup (without the fried noodles). It was still just broth with a little egg in it, so I didn't think it was too bad, and it did get me over the crazies. Just hang in there, it does get better!

Wow! I needed to hear that! I'm struggling today as well. I"m only 4 days in, but today was a real challeng. I had pre-op appointments this morning that had to fasting.....no Protein shake. that was at 8:45. Then they sent me to another apointment at 10am. By the time I got home it was almost 1pm. Thats 19 hours without anything!! it would be that big of a deal two weeks ago, but when you are living on 600 calories a day I was stakey and starving. I broke down and ate my lean cusine meal for lunch instead of dinner. So now I know I will be hungry at dinner .....................and a shake aint going to cut it.

Lesson learned: Don't let your doctor schedule things back to back like that!! This diet is such a mind game and when someone shakes your day up, its hard to keep your head in the game.

I'm being positive one bad day doesn't undo everything else. I have lost 16 pounds since December. And 6 of them have just been from Sunday. 1 more pound and I will actually see the "teens".

Hang in there friends. Xavier is so right!!! This IS the last diet of my life!!!!

Sounds exactly like my pre-op diet was. Who is your doctor? I agree with the others...just keep telling yourself its only a few days...and drink as much broth, eat as much SF Jello and SF popsicles as you need to...and water! Don't forget your Water. That's what I did. I also had the fasting tests in the middle of it as "waitingpatiently" did today. It was rough. I'm trying to go to bed a little earlier at night too. You can't eat if you're asleep. (and I don't feel my hunger until well after my alarm goes off in the mornings.). Blessings to you on this journey!

Best of luck to all! My first year was a struggle of major adjustment and it went slow because I live about 5 hours from my fill doc...I ended up finding a closer doc. The thing is I never dieted or ate ANY low fat or low calorie food and I never exercised except for occasionally walking my plump mini dachshund! I was obese nearly 20 years and since ny daughter is 17 it was getting ridiculous to call it baby weight! I feel like every time I lost weight I eventually gained it all aback and a little more and in the last few years I couldnt lose at all! I am 48 and I was banded June of 09.When I had my third fill (I think) I was at 6cc in a 10cc band and I was in the green zone...eating tiny meals, Protein first but otherwise any food I wanted and I lost about 6 pounds a month. I had some (2 I think) very long plateaus where I was really lucky to never gain but didnt lose either (also I work 5 hours from home in the exact opposite direction of my doc!) so I just stayed the same and felt pretty lucky to be weighing 180 Ithink...Finally a friend told me to quit whining and get a fill and I think I got 1.7 cc and started back to losing easily. The I plateaued again at 155 for a very long time and it just stayed in the back of my mind that at 145 I would be normal BMI. So I found the closer fill doc and got 0.3cc which I thought was nothing and next thing I knew I was 140 which is about where I have stayed...at this point its easy and no matter if I feel I am eating like a pig my weight stays the same! Other than protein first I dont think too much about it but I eat very tiny meals any and every time I am hungry and even sometimes when I just want food! I wear a size 6 and I cant freakin believe it even now!

Im struggling today as well. just watched a video by Dr. Ortiz tonight . He said something fairly profound. " of course you are hungry, you are human and humans feel... It's what we are designed for". He was discussing post op... But really, that's true. It's giving me a feeling I control. Of COURSE I'm hungry. I'm human and I feel. Just acknowledging that has given me some resolve. I don't know why. And I dont know if it will help you any.... But you're human and you're supposed to be hungry. It's ok :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
