Why Sugar Free?

Sugar has tons of calories but no nutritional value. Calories is what got most of us into Morbid Obesity. For many sugar is an addictive substance with very detrimental consequences.

Ok, just wondering because i was trying to get use to stuff with Splenda and ewwww! It has this lingering after taste to me.

I was also wondering about slim fast? Is that on the liquid menu?

After surgery with Spivak... I was specifically told no Slim Fast.

Dr. Spivak also tells us to stay away from sugar... as we all should if we want to lose weight :welldone2:

Ok. I knew I remembered them telling me low carb low sugar but then I was like, did he say low carb, no sugar? :cry

Also, I met a lady in Target who had went to Spivak like a week earlier and she was buying slim fast, but she wasnt buying the regular kind...

SF is a debateable topic.

Mostly people choose SF to reduce the number of calories (particularly liquid calories) that they ingest. There is wide debate on the safety of artificial sweetners, and whether or not they actually increase cravings for sweet things.

Sugar, in addition to containing empty calories, tends to spike the blood sugar, which creates an insulin reponse that turns dietary fat into body fat. Once the insulin has removed the sugar from the blood, most people have some sort of blood sugar "crash" that makes them hungry and craving sugar again.

I don't think there is any simple answer for people who like sweets. Whole fruit would be the best option, but somehow doesn't satisfy most people's desire for chocolate and other sweet baked goods.

There are some more complex "natural" sugars, like black strap molasses and honey, but I don't know how much of a difference that really makes, as opposed to white sugar.

I think it's clear, though, that we should probably avoid corn Syrup and high fructose corn syrup at all costs... :phanvan

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
