Is It Okay To Start The Preop Diet A Week Early?

Recommended Posts

On today, I had my pretest and it appears everything is okay and place. The documents i received stated that I should start the PreOp Diet two weeks before surgery to ensure my liver has shrunk. Would it be harmful if i started a week early? I want to make sure that my liver is small enough to move and won't cause any problems during the procedure. Please help!!!

I started probably 2 months before my surgery . I was scheduled for November surgery but dr didn't check gallbladder till right before and found it full of stones, so instead of lapband, I got gallbladder surgery. I was rescheduled for December but I chickened out and rescheduled for Jan 24, 2012 where I did finally do it, and throughout the whole time I was drinking the Protein shakes. and eating way less. It really helped the last two weeks go by easy and the last night before surgery I had a KFC drum stick and mashed potatoes,

It wouldn't hurt, and you can ask your nutritionist/dr's office to make you feel more comfortable.

I don't think it would hurt at all. My surgeon had me start my pre-op diet 3 weeks ahead of time and a week before that I was already places on a high Protein, no carb diet to jump start everything. I say go for it, you should do just fine.

Probably will not hurt anything, but two weeks of the pre op diet was enough for me, don't think I could have taken three weeks.

It is not going to hurt but remember you have 2 weeks of preop then if you are on the normal schedule another 2 weeks of liquids after surgery, then 2 weeks of mushies then 2 weeks of soft foods before you get back to eating "normal" food. Although this is in reality a short period, when you are going through it , it feels like forever. Why make it any longer than you have to?

My surgery is in April. At my last visit with my surgeon in January, I asked him about starting a diet the next day. He encouraged me to proceed.

I agree you should consider the post surgery food requirements. 3 weeks preop and then 2 weeks post op of liquids would be a LONG time. You MUST follow your doctors requirements post op so consider that when deciding when to begin a liquid diet. My doctor had not given me a pre surgery diet. I put myself on a Protein Shake (including fruit) for Breakfast and supper and a low cal/fat, high Protein lunch; for several weeks presurgery.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
