Hello everyone! I am scheduled to have lap band sometime in April 2012. Does anyone know if I can get lap band if I have kidney damage. My left kidney has scar tissue and my right kidney is great. One doc said my GFR is at 82 and another said 101. Any input would help! Thanks! :D

I have Stage III CKD and my GFR is in the 50's. My kidney doctor said the surgery could only help my situation! He said the food I eat will be healthier, no more soft drinks, drinking more Water, my BP would be lowered and much more! Just be sure to check with your doctor and see, as we know they all vary in their opinions and treatment plans! Good Luck!

Thank you for your input. I barely received a consult today to schedule w/ neph. My right kidney is fine but I am very concerned about left kidney scarring. MRI says "stable cortical thinning in posterior pole of left kidney possibly from prior UTI". I feel in my heart this surgery can only benefit me. Today I did my blood work and nutrition consult at True Results. So tomorrow my chart w/ labs should be on the medical director's desk to say yay or nay! I hope it's a yay. I thought I was automatically scheduled for surgery at the beginning of April 2012 but today I learned I may need clearance w/ neph. Wish me luck!

Good luck with nephrology. I also think it would be more help long term.

My 13 year old son had a non-functioning kidney removed when he was in kindergarten. One of my many reasons for surgery is because I already had elevated A1C levels and a family history of diabetes. Although we don't expect him to ever have issues with his good kidney, it never hurts to keep both of mine healthy!
