problem finding port!

Recommended Posts

Hi, i was just wondering if anyone has had problems with the doctor not being able to find the port?, i went today to get my first fill at ten weeks, having lost 9kilos without a fill a knew that i cannot do this on my own,the lump that i have below my boobys was what i and the doctor thought was my port, after several attempts and i mean 7 tries he realised that he could not find it, after sticking the needle in then prodding around with the needle i was then whimmpering in pain like and idiot he decided to get another doctor, luckly the doctor that came actually assisted the doctor who did my op, he said that he remembered me, he had a prod with his fingers not the needle and said that i had scar tissue below my boobys and that my port was actually a few inches down, so his did the fill and it was over in a second,he said that sometimes not very often that things move around a bit and that happened with me, i am feeling a bit sore now where the first doctor pocked about but it should be easier next time,

thanks for listening, Jacqueline,xxxxxxxxxx

So far my port hasn't been too hard to locate, although we did discover last visit that i was missing a mil, surgeon puts it down to missing the port.

Anyway, i had a fill last visit, and it was too much, so i contacted my surgeon. Unfortunately he was interstate so i had to see someone else. Well, firstly ,he stuck the needle in inches away from the port, then proceeded to dig around on my breast bone. It was at that point i told him to take it out. He then tried to feel for the port, and couldn't find it, so i found it for him. So we get ready to go again and he says "This might take a few tries"! It was then i jumped up and told him to forget it and that he had no confidence in what he was doing.

Which all means that i have to wait 2 weeks until i can eat something solid - oh well, i needed a jump start.

Can you request the competent Dr. next time you go?

Best wishes, Rachel.

It has happened to me and it freaked me out!!! I went last week to have my band deflated before I go out of town and the nurse missed it twice. What bothered me the most was not that she missed...I understood why but it was just the pushing on my port that had me wanting to get sick and pass out!!! The third time was the charm!! She explained to me that as you lose weight, the fat around your port goes away or shifts and it allows the port to move and tilt, so it isn't facing out like it did when I first got it. And then after she took out the saline and needle my adrenaline went out of this world!!! I was moaning and groaning and in cold sweats! They said I sounded like a woman in labor with all my moaning!! I just was freaked out and I didn't want to pass out so I was breathing really hard and I started to cry. But after it was over and I calmed down I was joking around with the nurses and we were all laughing together and laughing at me. So we made light of the situation! I go on 03-09-06 to have my fill done but that is going to be by the doctor himself so I am looking forward to that! The nurses do the deflations at the office and he does the fills at the surgicenter so he can check the restriction with the barium swallow. But I guess this is just part of the whole process and stuff that you sometimes have to deal with. But it is worth it! :biggrin1:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
