Darkening Of Underarms

Recommended Posts

Hey ladies question.

Awhile ago I was at my doctors and they said I had darkening of my underarms due to being over weight. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and after they had the Lap-Band and lost weight if the discoloration went away. Im hoping to hear from insurance next week for approval. Any insite or experience is greatly appreiated. Good luck everyone! ^_^

I was never actually told I had this by a doctor but it was pretty obvious if you looked. I never even thought it could be due to being overweight....

Those who are overweight may experience a condition called 'acanthosis nigricans', which is characterized by the darkening of the skin in the underarms, groin and neck. So, dark underarms can be caused by any of the above said reasons.

I'm not sure if it has to do with being overweight, but I know it's often seen in polycystic ovarian syndrome. Have you ever been checked for the condition?

Good to know, I thought it was because I ate too much beef/pork. (and because I'm hispanic I just thought it was part of nature)

I know this can be a sign of something more serious, but it can also be caused by your deodorant. My daughter had this problem in high school (she was not overweight at the time) and the doctor told her to switch to a deodorant for sensitive skin and the dark underarms went away. Couldn't hurt to give it a try while checking for other health problems.
