Reflux Gone !! What Foods Work And Don't Work For You ?

Recommended Posts

So I'm six days post band and I have tried all of the liquids and shakes. I am down about 8 pounds. The other day I had a bowl of spaghetti sauce for dinner. Now pre band I would have had a gallon of Water an an hour of reflux and pain. I had none and was so happy !

That being said I know we are all different but I was wondering if there were particular foods that you tend to stay away from now that you are banded ? Also are there any foods that you are surprised that you have fallen in love with ?

youre doing really well... it must be very encouraging to be able to try out the foods you like an that they agree with you. way to go. im not done yet, but already im very aware that i need to chew my food at least 30 times... and tonight i did, on average 50 times. i had a small plate full but at the end of my meal i had no indigestion. that proves to me that im not chewing my food enough. how many times to you find you have to chew each mouthful?/ were you full after you had finished or before you finished the bowl?

You are still very early, and a lot of things you have learned to do, although very good lessons, do not apply to you yet untill your band is "Turned On" and working as it is intended which takes a few fills to acheive.

For instance, they tell you not to drink Water with your meals. You probably could being where you're at right now, but when you get some real restriction drinking while eating would be a disaster. So learn not to do it now.

But to answer your question, unfortunately, you are going to have to learn that for yourself, and as it was for me, it was a school of hard knocks getting stuck, experienceing pain and discomfort, until I learned the hard way what to stay away from and what is acceptable, not to mention you are going to have to learm new eating techniques also. Will not be able to eat like you used to.

Thanks B you have been an inspiration on this site. I may have Mis spoke the gallon of Water I was speaking if was to eliminate the reflux I had before the band.

I currently do not drink while I eat until an hour or so after the meal

isnt it wonderful that baby food can be such a help when it comes to food post op.

it saves so much work preparing and there are so many different flavours now. i must remember to start looking out for them when shopping so ive got a supply when i need it.

so it does make a huge difference how many times we chew each mouthful. for months now i thought i had gastritis... but im thinking now that it was just eating way too fast. i didnt have much relief from it either. Tonight proves to me that chewing more certainly is solving my problems.

Thanks for sharing about the baby foods.. im in australia, im not sure what veges etc are available here. hopefully the same. ONe thing... this forum is certainly making me think. about a lot of things. thanks everyone for your input.

Hello,

I had my lapband done a week ago and have gone off my Acifex (heartburn reducer) It was a prescription drug so that right there is a huge plus!

I was even having some heartburn with taking the medicine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
