What Does Being "stuck" Feel Like?

Thank you all for your words of wisdom.

I will be 3 weeks post op on Tuesday and get my 1st fill the 19th. Have lost 11 so far:) (i didn't have to do the preop diet)

It can only get better!!!!!!!!

im wondering now if i have a hiatal hernia. i havent been banded yet but ive got a growing problem of discomfort in my diaphram... i can only describe it as being a cross between heartburn and ''heart attack''..lol.. cant think of anything more graphic than that. its definately been worse these last few weeks. more so since i blended squash , zucchini, etc and made a thick Soup from it. skins and all. perhaps the roughage was just too much?/ i dont know. i wanted to ask though.. did any of your drs tell you that being over weight, especially with the rolls of fat that accumulate just under the bra, cause the problem to worsen?/ ive been doing some reading online about hiatal hernias but weight isnt mentioned at all. thanks for your input.

I don't know.....turns out I had one that I didn't know I had (apparently pretty common in overweight people) and they fixed it in the surgery. Since then I haven't had any heartburn, etc.

Many of us have hiatal hernias. They can often be fixed at the time of banding.

Obesity is a factor is hiatal hernias..from medline:

The cause is unknown, but hiatal hernias may be due to a weakening of the supporting tissue. Increasing age, obesity, and smoking are known risk factors in adults.

thanks... it does sound like obesity is a contributing factor then.. ive put on so much weight above my ''waistline'... it feel uncomfortable all the time. imust writ down all the things i want to talk about. i will forget otherwise. lol.

im 11 weeks banded, just had my 3rd fill and finaaly hit the green zone ,however i can still eat EVERYTHING ! In this last week ive had steak , chicken breast, turkey meatballs, raw broccoli, fresh pineapple, baked potatoes, salsa and chips etc. as long as i eat slow and chew everything well, ive done fine. the few times ive gotten stuck was when i ate too fast and wolfed my food. real quick i got a lite pain in my side like a side ache, and a stuck feeling in my chest. as soon as you think its passed and you feel fine it comes right back. i always wait several minutes for it to pass before i try again. learned that the hard way ! im down 22 lbs, feeling great ! hope all goes well for you, good luck !

thats good news. i was wondering how things would turn out, i know that those who have lapbanding are more prone to having problems. i didnt want to think that i would have more issues than what ive got now with what i think is a hiatial hernia. by the way... i always thought it was hiatus hernia... is there a difference??

this is just so encouraging. one of the biggest issues that we face after banding is what is our diet going to be like?? im so pleased that you are doing so well... and after a fill. good on you. i hope that i do half as well. i will be really happy. ...and congratulations on the weight loss. i just love to read about these posts. my appointment with my specialist is day after tomorrow.

I would be afraid to eat steak... I really would stick to the plan. In fear of band slippage. When you eat anything that grows when chewed, your new stomach will try to push that through and could cause possible slippage of your band. This is just my thought. I still can't eat steak and I am 2 years out. I know to stay away from breads, steaks, anything that grows or swells when chewed (which always was my weakness). You just don't want any stress on your band especially this early in the game. Stick to your doctors rules instructions on eatting so very important. This is just my thought. You just don't want to mess up all you have accomplished. Good Luck!

i agree, sticking to your drs rules is very important, the funny thing is i was never told to stay away from any food unless it bothers me. well,so far nothing bothers me . i feel lucky so far! im not a big steak eater anyway , 1-2 times a month maybe, and bread maybe once a week, if that . some people in my support group have trouble with certain foods, ( skin of the potatoes, Cereal, broccoli , pineapple, apples ) but i was told to enjoy what you can as it may change later on. we'll see !!

Dahlia, same with me. I was not given a strict diet to follow. Basically, if it hurts, don't eat it. Don't eat junk, don't eat brainlessly.

I try to stick to that plan as much as possible. I don't eat chicken breast because it almost always gets stuck. I can eat steak if I cut it up small and chew it well. I don't think I've ever gotten stuck on it.

Is this what happens to steak and chicken? ? it swells when you swallow it?? i dont know much about it at all. i was wondering though... what if these meats were cooked slowly in a slow cooker and the fibre broken down well?? would that make a difference?? idont want to think that i have to give up beef or chicken.

I am just like you! I am, after today's fill, at 7.6 in. 10cc band and I have not had trouble eating anything! I eat chicken about 3 times. week and fish the other 4. I can eat salad, raw veggies, all cooked veggies and never have a problem. I tried some of my husband's steak the other night and had no problems. I am so thankful that my surgeon filled me slowly so I could adjust and completely learn all the bandster rules.

I rarely eat Soups or slider type meals because my dr wants me eating dense Protein. I guess we're all so different.

I would hate to worry about vomiting after every meal. It's only happened once so far. The offending food was sauerkraut of all things! I've eaten it since with no problems.

Someone comitted that you were not "following the rules". I was never told NOT to eat a variety of foods. I was given dier that is high Protein, low fat and low carb. So I follow those guidelines 90% of the time. There's nothing wrong with having the occasional sweet, bread, or red meat as long as you can. Good luck everyone and remember restriction does NOT mean an inability to eat certain foods, but being satisfied on much less food than before.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
