Banded On The 28Th, So Much Pain

Recommended Posts

My left arm feels like it was dislocated while in surgery, my stomach is really sore, I can only sleep about 4 hours at a time and I'm unhappy, this has to be the storm before the calm. Today I have a headache, Lord help me please.

It will get better. I was banded 2/20. We all have the "what have I done to myself" thoughts. Walk walk walk. Remember they did some major stuff while in surgery. You're pretty banged up when you come out. There are much better days ahead. Hang in there. You've made it this far. Stay strong. We are all behind ya.

Are you eating regular food, or are you still on the liquid diet?

Trust me it will get better. After I was banded I cried for a whole week, I was depressed and in pain. I am 3 months out and have lost 49 pounds..I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Left shoulder pain is very common post-op. For some reason the gas they use to fill your belly so they can see seems to rise to the left shoulder once we are awake and mobile. Try a heating pad and walk, walk, walk. Gas-x strips can also help dissipate it. Yes, I know, the pain is not in your stomach, but they can help.

Walking is the best treatment for getting rid of that gas, though.

Usually by day 3 post-op people are feeling much less like they have just been hit by a bus.

Stay on top of the pain with your pain meds, don't let it get above 3 on the pain scale. It will get better.

Denise is right, by day 3 I was starting to feel human again. I was banded on the 28th also. I still have pain in my left shoulder, but as Denise said, it's from the gas, I was advised of this pre-op and post-op so I know it's nothing to worry about. My best advice is to stay on top of the pain meds. I took the maximum dose at the minimum intervals and slept as much as I possibly could the first 2 days. On the third day (yesterday) I started feeling a little more "normal" and got out and did some walking, it helped a LOT! I drink about a quarter of a cup of a Protein smoothie when I'm hungry and try really hard to get Water in the rest of the day, it's hard, it fills me up fast, but I know it's the right thing to do.

The night I got home I said that if I'd had any idea how much it was going to hurt I wouldn't have done it. Boy did I regret it right then. But now that I'm on my 4th day post-op the regrets are already gone and so are 10 pounds!!! Keep us posted and feel better soon.

I had mine done on the 28th, too. I seriously questioned my decision after the gas pains hit!! But being an RN, I knew they would pass. I am still having some burning at my port incision site, but it is better. I have a high tolerance for pain and have only taken 1/2tsp of pain med at a time once or twice a day. However, on day 3 I took 3 doses (the gas pain was really bad!). I have not needed anything other than liquid Motrin today. My concern is the hunger. My doctor and bariatric nurse have a very strict diet plan. The first whole week is Clear Liquids only. I am really bored with that!! I am not supposed to start full liquids until Tuesday (1 wk post-op) and then stay on that for another week. Does anyone else have such a strict diet?

Exactly The worse is over!! They do want you up and moving though. It will get easier!! Your mind in the beginning messes with you, as you learn what you can have and what you can't. Trust me it will get better, YOU DID IT!! You should be so proud of yourself! I promise you it is a rewarding journey. Each day will get easier.

Wow, thanks y'all. I needed to hear from each of you and yes, I am on that very strict liquid diet for two weeks post op, I wanted some kind of food today after my headache started, but I came home and had half a Protein Shake and a pain pill and went to sleep, I lost approximately 12 pounds pre op and I will purchase a scale to see how much post op and let y'all know. Much Love!

Good luck Foxxie...I also felt as if my left shoulder had been dislocated! I believe it has something to do with the Phrenic nerve related to your diaphragm. I googled it and it made more sense:) I was banded on valentines day and the pain lasted about 2 weeks... More when I would feel full!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
