Second New Band...i Haven't Been This Hungry Since Before My First Band 2 1/2 Years Ago!

Recommended Posts

I've been told by the nutritionist that if you are going on a cruise or vacation to come in and get the Fluid out of your band so you don't have the restriction. Does this mean that you can eat a little more than the 8 ounces without causing slippage? Wondering because...I had a larger band put in because of swelling in my stomache with the smaller band that wouldn't go away. Havn't had my first fill with this second band yet so I'm completely open! I haven't been this hungry since before my first band was placed 2 1/2 years ago! Thinking I can maybe eat a little more until my first fill to keep that hunger down, it's so bizzare feeling "hunger" again...Don't like it much!

That sounds pretty crazy to me, I wouldn't do it. Are you looking for permission to eat on vacation? For myself, I don't miss the old way of eating, and that was eating til I was stuffed!

Ditch the idiot nutritionist for starters!

That is such irresponsible advice. One thing any bandster knows is that once you have good restriction you do not mess around with it. It is so easy to lose that perfect place and unfilling your band is one very common way for that to happen. It can also cause slight shifting as has happened to me (mine was unfilled for a major surgery), and whilst that's not a problem, I've never gotten the same sort of restriction back, even when my band has been FULL. Luckily I've changed my lifestyle, kept my weight off for so long my body is now used to it and having less restriction really hasnt been a huge problem. And the second thing is, if you've really changed the mindset and lifestyle of a fat person, then holidays arent all about scoffing food anyway. You dont need an empty band to taste new things, enjoy small portions of them, etc.

But certainly, if you're wide open with an as yet filled band, starving hungry and are prepared to wear the consequences of eating more, then you can safely do so. But it might be an idea to eat things that will fill you without too many calories - a wholegrain sandwich full of salad vergies and Protein is very filling but also very healthy, and less likely to cause weight gain than stodgy, heavy bistro food for example. That's what I did when I had to be unfilled and the only weight I ever gained was weight I'd lost due to being sick and just took me back to a BMI of 21.

actually i did wonder about going on vacations and cruises, and how i would get on. we went on a cruise towards the end of last year. it was our first and a real eye opener on how much food is eaten while on the boats. way too much but its hard to resist. its all apart of the cruise experience.. at least with the band there is the option to have it empty while away. that option isnt available with the other surgeries .

I went on a cruise, shortly after having a slippage repaired. I was able to eat, but also, I was able to control my eating. I would suggest that if you can't control yourself from eating an 8 oz steak, for instance, you need to have a slight fill before your cruise. Just because the food is there, doesn't mean you have to eat your way through the cruise. They have lots of activities that you could enjoy, instead! Good luck to you and your new band.

Did you just have the new band placed? Or can you try and get in sooner than the 2 weeks?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
