Hi to all! I was just banded on February 14th. Today makes one week and about 4:00 every evening I began to get hungry. Is this normal? I have been reading some of your comments for the last week and I hope that I do as well as you all have done on dropping the weight. I guess patience is the thing right. Well hope to talk to some of you soon. Just wanted to say Hi!

Hello and welcome to the band!!

Totally agree with harley, just grab something liquid (maybe warm chicken broth - warm personally fills me up better!) You'll be back to real food in a couple of weeks...it may feel like longer, but you are giving your body time to heal and adjust!!!

Mary, a fill is when the doc adds saline to the band by placing a needle in your port (it is under the skin, of course), and adding a bit of saline. Once you get a good fill, you will be able to eat less while feeling full (or so I've heard!!)

Good luck!!

So....how long is the port in?

Mary, the port is part of your band ensemble. It is sewn to the muscles of your abdomin and the skin is closed up over it. As the band is put in place to stay, so is the port.

Mary - Here is a link to Inamed's website that has a ton of great information about the Lap Band proceedure. When you get to this page, on the left hand side you will see several other links listed under the main heading of Lap Band System: Product information, Patient information, Risk information, Before and After pics, FAQs, etc.

http://www.inamed.com/products/obesity/us/patient/lapband/prodinfo.html

This site shows more of the band and the port and also has short videos which show how a fill is done and how the band is put in place.

http://www.core.monash.org/placement.html

Check it out. I think you'll find the information very helpful. And of course, come back here and ask all the questions you want. We love to help others find out about this great tool we have!

By the way.. the fills do not hurt. I had no surface numbing or anything and felt nothing!

Tfavre24 - Grats on your banding. What a wonderful start you have on your journey already! I found that by eating every three hours, and getting in a lot of Protein (min 60 grams per day) really helped me with the hunger issues. Don't worry about it too much right now. The first six weeks is for your band to settle in as the swelling goes down. Like the others said, once you start getting fills and find the right restriction for you, you'll be less hungry between meals.

Welcome to LBT!

At the end of week two, 4:00pm ish I was starving!!!! I called my nutritionist... she recomended that I drink a 8oz glass of milk, slowly. Low Fat is prefered (actually she wants me to drink Fat Free Plus.) It has Protein and stays in your stomach longer.. It helped me. Right after school I had my glass of milk and made it a much easier night! Good Luck! Do it, it's worth it!!!!

Welcome to LBT Tfavre24 ~ I am new here also and I'm preband, just waiting on the green light from insurance. That's really special you were banded on Valentine's Day. :clap2: You will never forget that surgery date.

You have found a special place for support. There is nothing out there better IMO.

:welcome2:

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
