Hi all. I am getting banded the 5th march and am very excited. I just have one concern, I haven't been given a list of what liquids I eat/drink in the first week. I will have to go shopping on the weekend. What should I have on hand?

The first week, Clear Liquids. You are not really going to want much that first week anyway. I had chicken broth, popsicles, green tea (warm) and lots and lots of Water and crystal light. I can honestly say, for the first 2 weeks after surgery, I wasnt really hungry at all. But when that hunger reared its ugly head, I could have eaten enough to make up for those 2 weeks!!!

You should contact your doctor, mine gave me a complete list, before and after surgery for all phases. Good luck!

I was hungry that first week! My dr gave me a booklet with all the information. I had 3 to 4 Protein Shakes a day, sugarfree Jello, posicles and broth. It was a tough 2 weeks for me. Today I started the 5 day pouch test and surprised I am doing fine on liquids only. If I could do 12 days of liquid postop before, I can do 2 days on the 5DPT!

My Dr gave me a booklet with all the necessary info. They are a center of excellence and allow the following:

- Phase one (first two weeks after surgery):

2% milk, low fat yogurt (no seeds or chunks), Protein supplement, Soups without lumps/chunks, Tomato Soup w/added milk, non-fat milk powder, pureed Soups (must strain through a sieve after blending), low-sodium vegetable juice, maximum 10oz per day 100% fruit juice diluted 1:1.

Phase 2 (2-4 weeks after surgery) is pureed foods.

Phase 3 (4-6 weeks after surgery) is soft foods.

After 6 weeks, you can start to eat "normal" foods. They recommend introducing new foods one at a time to make sure you can tolerate.

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow so I am hoping I will get all the literature then. Wow newme2010 we will be twins! Someone has told me prune juice is a must have. One more question. Do I have to have someone stay with me when I get home from the hospital or will I be ok for the day?

Honestly everyone is different they just stretch it a bit with this menu ... It is no big deal.. but of course that is me talking 2 years out.. don't let this schedule worry you.. you will fiqure out a routine for the next 6 weeks after surgery.. You will do great! Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
