Massive Quick Weight Gain- After Band Adjustment

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery In august 2009, I started at 304 and by August 2011, I met my goal weight of 140. I usually fluctuate from 138-143. My last adjustment was in October 2010. I started getting these severe back pains in my mid to lower back when I would try to eat something at the beginning of this month. This lasted for about 2 weeks, until I decided to go back to my Dr and he recommended that I remove the Fluid from my band to see if that helped and also sent me to get an upper GI to see if it had slipped. As soon as he removed the Fluid, I was able to eat- YAY! I did not go crazy as I still watched my caloric intake and excerisize daily (teach 5 Zumba classes per week); however, I seem to have gained 15 lbs in 7 days!!! I went to my primary Dr as I thought it was probably Water weight as I was so bloated and you could see it in my hands & feet. He sent me to the ER for an EKG, echo, blood tests, etc and everything came back normal.... He released me the next day, gave me a prescription for lasiks and told me to go about my normal routine. The scrip was for 10 days and I am contiuing my workouts however nothing has happened and my body feels very sluggish and I have no energy!

My question- has anyone had this issue after a band adjustment?

Could u be having an allergic reaction to something that could cause you to swell up and retain Fluid. I dont think lasiks would touch that type of swelling .. just a thought cant help otherwise sorry :(

I haven't changed my diet or daily work/work out routine to have an allergic reaction

15 lbs is some 52 THOUSAND excess calories. If it were truly a fat gain. Something else is surely going on. Just letting Fluid out of the band does not explain it. Plenty of us have had unfills. I had a slight unfill. Did the Lasix do anything?

I had a similar problem. I was coughing a lot and had issues keepinf any food down

Surgeons office removed all Fluid. By my weigh in the next week I was up

10 lbs. I was exercising the same and eating proper choices and portions.

Two weeks after that I was up another 7 lbs.I got very discouraged.dr said just keep doing.......just got 4ccs last week......now I start over!!!!

Keep in touch......I feel your pain...... :)

Wow, Salty1986, I'd have never thought a gain like that could be just due to an unfill. I hope the refill helps you out!

As said, it can't all be fat. Did they check your thryroid? I stupidly stopped taking my thyroid medication, due to lack of insurance, and blew up like a balloon. I was fine once I went back on the meds. Just a thought.

the back pains make me wonder if it isn't something to do with your gallbladder, they sometimes go "bad" after weight loss, and I know I've had gallbladder attacks that felt like I'd pulled a back muscle.......Let us know when you find out!!!

..and its a very important point that you just made here. there are a lot more people out there who do have a thyroid problem than we realize. i wonder if you had a thyroid test done?? even then, i dont believe the readings that the drs accept are low enough. it would be really good if you could start on some thyroid meds. you can buy them over the counter.. .that is, unless you have seen a dr and got a script for thyroid meds. i take selenium. sometimes the adrenals can get really stressed when the body goes through trauma. selenium helps a lot. so does MACA root. its worth a try.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
